  • hurst shifter

I found a newer T5 hurst shifter on the local classifieds for $25. I know the SVO originally had a hurst in it. Would this be an improvement? Mine feels pretty mushy, I assume the bushings are worn out in the original, or maybe it's the tranny. Anyway, does it sound like something I should pounce on?

The mushy feeling comes from the rubber bushing/coupler where the shifter lever bolts to the shifter. Probably the only advantage the aftermarket one has is the shifter stops. If the factory rubber part is comming apart you can take it off. You will have to make a couple of metal bushings though.

I have an aftermarket hurst w/ stops in mine and it is a world of difference compared to factory hurst and steel bushings

hope this helps ... For 25 bucks its worth a try if you dont like it re-sell it

Thanks for the quick replies! I don't think I can go wrong at that price. Looks like I'll be getting it, so we'll see how it works. I just remember putting an aftermarket shifter, Steeda I think, on my 94 Cobra, and it was so much better than stock. Not quite the same thing, since the SVO probably already has a better shifter than the Cobra did stock, but I figure it's worth a try.

          Got it!

I got the shifter today. I didn't have any trouble getting it installed, except now the leather shift boot is way too big for the short shifter so it's all bunched up. It shifts great! So much nicer than the factory one. When I got the original shifter out I could clearly see how much play there was from the rubber bushing. This one is bolted together, and feels really different.

          Not bad for $30!

One quick question. There wasn't much fluid in the 'box' under the shifter (not sure what to call that area). Should there have been?

There should only be a little amount of tranny fluid there. There is a breather hole that allows vapors to travel up in that area. When the vapors cool, you will get some tranny fluid condensation.

              fluid

              Stef,
You can't use that area for fliud level-it's remote to the fluid. In fact anything after the box is feed off the 5 gear oiler.

You having an 84-USE care if looking into fluid level!!!!!!
It is done on a square plug on the driver side-BUT THERE ARE TWO!!!!

NEVER touch the top plug at this is the reverse arm piviot!!

              Mark

Ford changed the pivot bolt to a STAR head - to lessen the risk of mistaking it for a fill plug in 85.5/86's

Change number 93 in 143 changes!! (and counting)

Whoa! That's a good one to know. I'll be sure not to turn the wrong one!

I wasn't trying to judge the fluid level from there. I just remembered that on my Miata people are always talking about making sure there's oil in the turret, which is pretty much the same area, but I couldn't remember if that area was supposed to have fluid in it on the T5. Good to know what I saw was normal.

I'm constantly looking for trouble with this car, but really it's in pretty good shape mechanically, it just looks nasty on the outside.

Cool, I'm going to have it up on the rack tomorrow having some exhaust work done, so I'll take a look then.

                    At least the "exhaust" guy....

At least you'll know to stop the Exhaust guy from going in to
the plug at the top on the LEFT of the box!!!

Claiming change number 139 and 140 here (differances between 85 and 85.5 change over)!!

Different reverse arm in the latter box and slider that engauges it

After a few days of driving with the new shifter I realized it was too short for me, I had a hard time reaching it. So I took the old shift arm off the original shifter, located some bronze inserts from the hardware store for bushings, and put that in place of the arm on the aftermarket shifter. Much better. I can reach it now and it looks normal (the other one looked really squatty), plus it shifts great.

That is what I did on my LX, the Hurst handle was too shrort and I could not reach 3rd and 5th.

Makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who thought it was too short.

That is one sweet looking 68 in your Avatar, BTW. I had two 68s, but both with 302s. Neither ever got that nice under my care, but the second one has been finished up by the new owner so it's pretty sweet now.

Thanks, but unfortunatly it is not a real 68 1/2 CJ car. I has a CJ and 4 spd in it now but originally it had a 289 bbl.
