  • What size turbo?

I have a 1986 SVO, which is completely stock. I wanted to upgrade to a bigger turbo and a wastegate, BOV. My question is what is a good brand and size turbo that I can use on my SVO and will I have to get a different intercooler or larger injectors.

Try this article over at Turboford.org: "How not to guess at turbo size" it's in one of the stickied posts. It is pretty informative and answered alot of questions for me and of course created a bunch too. Then learn how to read a compressor map and decide what kind of power you want to make and where in the powerband. It's a big choice to make so research it carefully and take your time.

There are still a lot of "in's and out's" that articles like this, howeve well intended, don't address. For a stock block, a Garrett GT3071RS is an excellent choice. The later GT Technology wheel designs (SVO's used the old T-technology like the Buick GN's) have superior aerodynamics for quicker spooling and more airflow. The dual ball bearing CHRA (which is rebuildable - others are not) is water cooled, doesn't use a journal bearing (the well known weak link in turbo designs) and stands up to potential oil starvations problems much, much better. Oh, and did I tell you it will spool about 400 to 800 rpm quicker?

I have an '86 SVO, too. Give me a call during business hours and I can give you some other choices to fit any number of budgets.

Rod - in the future - you need to contact ADMIN prior to posting anything VENDOR related.

I appreciate your time in helping people with tech questions on the forum, but this is not a place for vendors to sell their wares/services unless they want to sponsor the club in some form/fashion.

Then, why don't you do me the favor of just removing the entire post.

Here's my combo T3/T4 hybrid w/ stock internals;stock TC IC w/bypass valve; 35# injectors;LA3 3" down pipe, pulls alot of air...20# at half throttle with no problem. I think 140cilx runs just a/b the same combo and his car put down 240rwhp! I dont know how to read a compressor map, prolly should take the time to learn tho, so I like to find out what folks use on the street..in the real world. That has worked well for me. Hope this helps alittle. Happy hunting.

I just ordered a turbo, and never looked at a compressor map --

I just called charlie @ evergreen. told him what #'s, and what rpm's I am after, and he set me up.

I'm saying that I'm sorry and please remove the post. It's hard to think positively about stepping up as a sponsor when you publicly manhandle someone for asking you to remove what offended you. I can't do it. You can. Understand?

FYI, these turbos are available from e-v-e-r-y Garrett Performance Distributor - not just us. In fact, I just referred a forum member in Arizona to two others that sell these.

I ask people everyday to call so we can 1) get a better idea of what kind of combination they have, 2) what their goals are and 3) what kind of driving they do in order to make a worthwhile recommendation. Hence, the name and phone number.

Lastly, on the matter of compressor maps, people don't understand that no where do these take into account what turbine or housing is being used to drive the compressor wheel. They only tell you so much. Nor does anyone ever ask for a turbine map . . . and, in some form of motorsports, people don't even bother to look at compressor maps at all. Many maps are also proprietary knowledge with some manufacturers . . . because of the misrepresentations that ensue.

Rod - you violated our Forum rules. Now you get your panties in a bunch when I flat - with no misunderstanding - set you straight about them? Whatever. Get. You can't read forum policy or obviously care not to bother with it, then I don't have time for you either.

I'm not going to be nice. You came in my house and started violating policy. Shame shame shame, I know your name. The members of this club (note: you ain't one of them) do NOT pay for this forum so you can FREEly sell your employer's parts/services.

One more smarta## reply. One more reported post. One more example of FREE advertising for your company. Dang, you already have 3 strikes? Boom!

With the low numbers of vendors who even pay attention to the SVO owners, I thought a slightly kinder word about the forum rules might encourage some involvement from a guy with experience we all might like to hear.

the words are in big letters -- (and bold)

VENDORS MUST CONTACT THE ADMIN BEFORE POSTING

                            when you sign up ..
had he done that, the words would have been much kinder

Had he contacted us directly after the first post, the words would have been kinder.

Do you want a turbo builder that can't read the rules?
Maybe there is some other stuff they didn't read as well.

this is a bit nitpicky Mike-- but here are the answers...

this guy just signed up, so it's fresh in his mind.
HAD he been here a while, he would have known how things work here, and most other places as well, even turboford has this clause in their signup page.
He should have known to contact us before offering up his services.
This wasn't a problem with Forced4 -- they had been here a long time before starting their business.

HERE is the exact wording of the statment on the sign-up page
Vendors: You are welcome here, but you must contact the SVOCA before using the forum for promoting your products; You should also refrain from doing product reviews on your own products

So -- if a vendor wants to come here and offer help to others, WITHOUT giving phone numbers, and business names, promoting their business, they are more than welcome.

The truth is, he was warned, and rather than saying oops, sorry, he came back with a smart remark "well just delete it then" -- sounds real Sincere --
