  • Where to get a decent clutch cable?

I've searched and read the threads on several boards, concerning clutch cables, but most of them pertain to 5.0's. Apparently there's a difference between 2.3 and 5.0 cables (length maybe?). The local Ford dealer wants $212 for a 4 cyl. cable! NOT! I've seen 5.0 cables for $40-$50. I'd like an OEM non adjustable cable. Everyone says, even though they're made in Taiwan, they're the best. I'm looking for the least amount of pedal effort possible. Thunderstang will be a daily driver.

I'm not sure about the universal cable. I'd like a model specific 2.3 cable, as I think the universal would be a bit too long. Any thoughts or recommendations?? Links are appreciated! BTW, I've got a Steeda quadrant and adjuster. Not completely sure of the clutch and p/p yet. Probably a M/M stage II

The length really isn't the issue, it can be routed out of the way. Some people use longer cables to keep the cable away from exhaust headers. The biggest issue is the end of the cable. Find a way to make it work with the bellcrank and you'll be golden.

BTW, Ford used a more conventional clutch cable setup on 79-80 4-speed turbo 4s. The bellhousing is transferable to a T5 and will allow you to use a "standard" clutch fork and cable instead of the bellcrank and dog bone cable setup found on later model year cars.

which IS a direct replacement including the beacket that bolts to the side rail. I've got it in the car just now. I didn't want to use my last NOS one - I found the rec't where I paid $137.85 way back in 1997.

Here's a collection of pics. The ATP cable has a black housing where the stock one is grey.

Well I will try the AC delco part this week. I am a dealer for Delco (go figure). I will post my result later.

I bought a Forte's adjustable set up and they send me a spacer block for the firewall to be used on the SVO.

Well I got the cable. You could make it work but it is not correct. I guess I will be ordering the other one.

I installed an eye-bolt and switched to the 5.0 cable with threaded end. I also installed an adjustable quadrant assembly with firewall tension adjuster at the same time. This has proven to be useful with aftermarket clutches.

Needless to say, this setup offers far more adjustability than the non-adjustable 4-cyl cable and flimsy factory quadrant.

To all the ATP part above is a dead on replacement. Local parts supply wanted 74.92 for the same cable. OUCH!!.

                              Correct Length???

I purchased a new clutch cable last night from Advance (Motomite brand #14806) and it was about 41" long - no metal bracket or boot on the end. The cable I removed from my '84 (I "assume" it was the stock cable) is about 60" long. Did I get the wrong cable from Advance? Their listing says it is the correct one so now we are both confused. What is the correct length -60"?

The ATP part number, Y220, listed above is for the 60" V8/GT cable according to the ATP catalogue. The ATP part number, Y147, is the 42" cable for the 2.3L 5-speed cars - and listed for the SVO. The 42" cable seems like the bend would be too tight but not sure since mine has the 60" on it now.

                              Thanks,
                              John
