Would the battery tray listed for an 86-93 mustang work in my 86 SVO? Thanks

    battery tray

I just took the battery out of my ,88 four cylinder Mustang to put in my '84 and the battery does not fit the tray, it is to big. So I dont know if the trays will interchange but the batteries will not. The newer cars use a different battery group. The clamps are different also.

the battery tray from 1987 to 1993 years are different and require a different battery than the 1979 to 1986.The79 to 86 batteries are taller and narrower. You must use the correct battery and tray combination for it to work.

5.0 resto has battery trays for 79-85 mustangs than a tray fro 86-93 mustangs so i was wondering if the tray for the 86-93 mustangs would work on my 86?

          50 resto is incorect.

As stated above you will need a different battery if you order one of thier tray's.

I ran into this with my 86 lx and 84 GT turbo.

It's no biggie if you had planned on purchasing a new battery at the same time.

The SVO uses the same size battery tray as the 79-86 Mustangs. That tray takes a group 56 battery and uses a steel battery hold down.

The 87-93 battery tray will work, but is slightly larger and takes a group 58 battery. It uses a plastic holddown of different design.

In other words, if I want to use a battery size from an 87-93 mustang all I need is the 87-93 battery tray and hold down? Will it be a direct replacement minus the hardware? Has anyone done this?

                YES, that's it.

My '86 SVO had the normally smaller battery than V-8 GT's. The desert heat is not a friend of batterys and I'd gone thru 3 such whereas my '82 GT has had just 1. I've since removed the smaller SVO battery box and installed a GT box and the GT sized battery: end problem as the larger battery has given 4-years service and is going strong. Both boxes have the same style hold-down and the larger does not look out of place if you're not a total purist besides, in my case, the extra life is a positive for me.
