Is there any advantage to doing a MAF conversion? Or is this something only needed at a certain power level?

Once its tuned right, driveability improves somewhat and it overcomes the metering limit of the stock vane air meter.

As I read more about it, I'm tempted to go the Megasquirt route should I ever reach the power levels where the stock electronics become insufficient.

What is the limit of the VAM?

        I got one.

I am still learning about it and don't know if I like it or not.
over 300 hp and you might want to start looking at it. Lots of tune time at the dyno and someone to do that for you if your not into that kind of stuff.
Turboford is where I learned most of it.
Like Bart said. Megasquirt, or the holly comander 950.
Lots of others to pick from.
Time to clean up the engine bay!

the big advantage I see is a simple one --

          less moving parts ---

How many threads in the last month have been resolved when the owner found they had a stuck VAM ?

I had one as well about 2 months ago.
I still haven't bitten the bullett and done it yet tho.

I am familiar with tuning EEC's. I have been running a Tweecer on my 93 cobra for about 3 years now.

SVO's are a new world to me right now though. So I am trying to learn what their faults are and how to improve them

I've been looking at Tweecer for a while now --
they are cheap enough, but they don't support data logging for the 2.3 computers (LA2/3 , and PE)

I've been a member of their yahoo group for a while, and I watch and read it quite a bit. I think thre is good tuneability there, just not sure how much it's going to take to get it working like it needs to.

There's just not a lot of support for the 2.3 out there..

What is the difference in the LA2 and LA3 processors? Is one of them for an auto and one for manual?

I also offer tweecer support over on my forums. www.streetstangs.net

LA2 and LA3 are almost the same. I have been told that some of the program stuff is in different locations but thats all.
I have not tried out the J3 maf on the LA2 yet to see if that is true. The LB2 LB3 was from the auto cars. And work on the 5 speed also.

I have one of each and could not see or feel any thing better from one to the other.

I will be free this weekend if you want to look at my setup. I can drive up your way or meet you some where.

My setup is a easy swap and with the right tools (time) can be tuned in a few runs. Waiting on Bart for that.

Not to far from you anyway.

Ahhh yes, car guy love. Gotta love people who are always ready to lend a hand,

Back to the topic, the EEC Tuner also handles the MAF swap, PhilC is runnning a 70mm unit in his 86. I guess the EEC tuner is a bit dated in terms of todays aftermarket EM software, but I still plan on running with it...

LMAO!!! I was just thinking the same thing. I wish i had this kind of help when i was on my back feeding the T5 back in after a clutch swap by myself at 2am and the F***'n throw out bearing kept falling out!!!

What ever happened to the SDS? No one likey no more? Whuts Jon Dell Blair run in his 9 sec SVO?

I guess im stil trynna lear the engine management aftermarket and whut not. But i thought you didn't need a air meter with some systems correct? Does it soley rely on MAP sensor readings?

SDS, got a friend running it on a 2.3t sandrail and there is no VAM or MAF to speak of, uses other parameters to operate. Only drawback to the system (does have a nice plug & play wirirng harness) is that it uses its own hand-help programmable unit, no laptop involve (which is a benefit to some people). I remember him getting the distributor dialed in was a PITA too, have to alter the hall-effect window IIRC.
