  • Knock Sensor

i've been doing a lot of reading on these pages over the last week or so and have learned a lot from everyones ideas and experiences. I have a question i would like to ask you but would first like to give you some background.

having read posts about 35*/LA3 swaps into 84's you wrote something about having to use the 86 manifold because the computer "hears" detonation earlier in the 84 manifold becasue it is "noisier". I'm assuming this is due to sensor position, manifold design or construction techniques.

I'm not a mechanical or electrical engineer but i do know that most sensors send the computer an electrical "message" in the form of voltage at a certain resistance range(Ohms??). Obviously this range is reached more quickly in the 84 manifold than the 86 and so the computer goes "what?? knocking!!!!! Whoa big fella!!!"

My question, finally, is......is it possible to trick the ECU into not hearing the KS by adding a "volume control" ?? I am thinkign that if you were to add a fixed or variable resistor into the KS wiringl loom, pre-ECU, you would be able to lower the threshold at which the ECU retards timing because it is not hearing as much "noise" coming from the sensor????

Any thoughts or suggestion you can give on this theory would be greatly appreciated.

    regards
    Chris

some people have tried putting teflon tape on the threads of the KS, changing the torque spec, and other varied ideas -- it's all inexact.

Mike -- does the KS actually look for voltage, or a specific wave that indicates knock
so raising or lowering the voltage would not really help if that is the case.
