ford power steering pumps have always wined -- ocasionally you run across a quiet one but most are noisy.

I guess you could somehow fit a Honda S2000's pump into the SVO. They have a redline of 8,000 rpm.

I think you will have to make a custom unit to get what you want.

I just killed the power steering pump on the 300zxtt that my friend got. The ecu that it has does not have a rev limit on it. I saw 8200 rpms and it was still pulling.
Custom pully from Ess. and a new pump would be my guess. I think they have them.

IMO, all the pumps whine. The louder they get the more likely that its on its last leg and the wheel will start getting "jitterry" soon enough.

Just some food for thought, but if someone was looking to underdrive it...I wonder if there is a slightly smaller pulley from an older ford with the dual belt set up and press on style that would work.

When I looked into making an evac pump I searched the yards for older F-150 /E-150's for different size pullys.

By the way Jim, next time you start a new topic, could we ask that you out the problem in the title of the thread ? Helps us out a bit more. ( For Example: maybee this thread could be titled "Power Steering whine." Thanks man. )

(Larger press on pulley would underdrive it)

Maybe one of these will work http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...1&autoview=sku

Here is some info I found on the web: "Besides the efficiency and horsepower gains, most stock accessories are not designed to run at higher than stock RPM's. For instance, OEM power steering pumps have been known to self destruct in racing applications. At a certain RPM the internal bypass becomes restrictive and pressure builds up. As the internal pressure continues to build, the fins on the impeller start to bend, fatigue and then break - there you have it - no power steering."

Or you can always go with a manual rack.

Now thats a good question. I have only see one setup where someone was NOT running PS and I can't for the life of me remember how their belt setup was, except that they were running a serpentine setup.

Anyone have pics or input on how the belt setup would be w/o PS? I guess one could use the early mustang n/a alternator bracket (like I have in my 81, which a 2.3 n/a w/o PS).

I ran a mannel rack for a while. Used the vbelt setup and just cut the power steering pump out of the braket. Smaller belt.
It was a 20 to 1 and 4 turns stop to stop. May go back to it for the street, strip car but not the autocross.

                            Underdrive Crank Pulleys

Barry Dean has underdrive crank pulleys for the SVO that might ease your high rpm situation. He doesn't hang out here, but can be found on the Turboford board and goes by the handle Turboalpine (yes he's got one with a 2.3 turbomotor ).
