  • Walbro fuel pump Id Question.

    Hey All,
got a quick question for someone......When I got my SVO from Stef it came with a box of parts, one of which was a fuel pump and tank bracket. I've been trying to work out what size it is and was wondering if anyone can identify it. Stef said it was from and 86 SVO but I would like to know for sure. It is makred: Walbro Model 5520, mfg. Date 21986-2. there are some patent numbers as well but they're probably not relevant.

I downloaded a Ford application chart from a Walbro dealer and it lists a "520" part no. for the 86 SVO and 86-90 5.0L. Does anyone know exactly what this pump is and what the flow rating might be??? I'm wondering if using this pump would allow me to eliminate my inline pump. Thanks

    Chris

can you find on it anywhere any markings such as a "GSS" number. The pump that is a 255lph is GSS340.
I am pretty sure the one you have is a 155 lph.

no. the only numbers on it are the ones i posted. I'm assuming that it is an older pump because of the build date which is stamped on it. (21986-2)

Here is what I have from my archives:
        ------------------------------------------------------------------
So for the record, get holley box part number 12-915 (Forced induction 255LPH Walboro) not the 12-902 (255LPH Walboro). The GSS340 kit is equivalent to Holley Pump P/N GSS349 or Kit P/N 12-915
        -----------------------------------------------------------------

This page may be of some use:

This thread may be of some use too....

And the answer is definitely in here, it has the 520# which you posted. Looks to be a stock unit for an 86.

And from memory the stocker fuel flow was like 90lph, the actual is in this thread:

          Hey Chalkeys'
Just in case this was never settled, I just looked at my fuel pump from my 86 and it has the same number on it, 5520. My Mfg date is 33085. I'm sure it's the original, so I'm sure yours is a 155lpr fuel pump.

this may be of some intrest to you. Why drop the tank, mess with lines, wires and filter when you dont have to. I'd say its well worth the extra 40 dollars.

              Some things to consider........
              1. I would not think the wiring is not set up to put a pump like that in place......and have it last it's full lifetime.

              2. If a pump has to put out it's rated capacity of 255 lph, it has to be able to DRAW that amount through the pump. The intank pump that's there now will most likely starve the 255, and make it work that much harder........not good.

              3. Unless someone has been in the fuel tank before you, it needs to be opened up and gone through....or possibly thrown out. These things are 20 years old now. Lot's of people have removed an old fuel pump from a tank and found it looked like a Titanic excavation. Sock is half clogged, check valve pooping out, discharge hose half rotted. It's also a good time to replace the sending unit.

If you can't find a cross reference anywhere, its not hard to check. I did it with a 190lph Ebay pump I got for my previous 5.0. What I did was do all the conversions for LPH to GPH to GPM. It turned out that I needed 2qts per 30sec, IIRC. Then I rigged some wires so I could hook the pump to a car battery. Then I got a big Costco-size Crisco can(empty and clean, about 1gal) and filled it partially with kerosene-based solvent. It's alot safer than gasoline and similar viscosity. I ran a hose from the pump outlet to a half-gallon milk jug and dropped the whole pump/sender assembly in the Crisco can. I ran the pump for 30 seconds and it exactly filled the 1/2gal milk jug, confirming I had indeed received a 190lph pump.

I'm pretty sure the stock fuel pump is a 88 lph unit.
