  • Did Ford Motorsports/SVO offer 2 or more different 140 speedo's?

I saw this eBay auction selling what looks to be an N.O.S. 140mph speedo. I am currently in the middle of a purchase of an 86 Comp. Prep. with an owner installed 140mph speedo. I saw the eBay auction picture and thought, something is different! I looked back at the picture of the 140 speedo which is currently in the 86 C.P., its mph increments are 10, 20, 30, 40 50, etc. through 140. There is a small red "hash mark" at 55mph which would have been "period correct" for the mid 1980's. The interesting this is that the bottom portion of the speedo face also says "Certified Calibration" like a police car would have. I noticed this eBay 140 speedo looks similar to my 140 speedo, but they are definitly not the same. Has anyone else run into these differences?

Here is the eBay 140 speedo:

    No more link.

    Thanks, R

Pretty sure Ford Motorsports or SVO in those days offered that speedo as an upgrade. I got an SVO catalog in 87 after I got my 86 and those were in there for something like $69, IIRC. Should have bought a case...who knew... This has been covered before here and you can search for it. Also, evilbay links are not allowed here. I'm not sure why, but they are frowned upon.

      Certified Calibration

As you stated the certified calibration speedo's generally came in the SSP Mustangs (Cop car's). I am not aware of Ford Motorsport ever offering the ceritfied 140 in their catalog. They did however sell two different 140 MPH Mustang speedometers. One version had the font for 79-82 Mustangs and the other was for 83-86. (of course they also sold one for the 87-93's as well)

Ford Motorsport definatley offered a 140 for the 97-93 years because I had one. I also recall a 160 but cant recall if FMS offered it or if it was a Saleen item.

The odd certified one might be from Fairmont SSP's? Same dash maybe different speedo for some reason.

Sorry about the eBay link. I was not aware that eBay links used for info. purposes were taboo.

Anyway, back to the 140 speedo. It definitley has the calibration info. at the bottom of the face and has been added to this SVO after the fact. The original 85mph speedo is also coming with the purchase of this CP, it has 1700 original miles on its odometer. The font of the numbers and color of the lettering (orange and white) match the surrounding SVO gauges as if this 140mph unit was originally installed by Ford, however, we know that it has been added. The differences between the eBay unit and the one in this 86CP are what had/has me puzzled. Maybe multiple vendors produced speedos for Ford Motorsports?

There was also a speedo made that went to 160 MPH - but I think that was only for the 1987+ dash.
Mike - The markings every 10mph is the one I have but with the calibration info. on the gauge face at the bottom by the trip odometer reset button.

Ok! That is an early Special Service Police Speedo (Not offered through FRPP) I would guess it is an '83, because it has the early graphics but red needles indicating a red illumination. '82 had simalar graphic but yellowish/green needles,
FRPP actually offered a 140 mph for the Ranger/ Bronco II, The Tbird and Several Mustang speedos But if I remember correctly, All FRPP Speedos (with the exception of the 84-86 140mph) Had the "Ford Motorsports" logo on them. You know who would be the, "Man to ask"? Dr Late model Mustang himself Jim Dingle, Or "Mustangparts" as he is known around here.
He is the expert when it comes to Police/Cobra/Cobra R/DSO parts, PM him or turn him on to this thread, He can answer this in his sleep.......Oh yea and can send you a set of those Dew wipes/Belt Moulding things!!!!!!

                        Police Speedos

All Police Speedos had the "Certified Calibration" logo on the and were as follows:
                        '82-'86 = 140mph
                        '87-mid year '89 = 140mph
mid year to end of '89 160mph (pssst- fits 87-89)
                        '90-mid year '92 160mph
mid year '92-'93 160mph with million mile odometer

trivia- When the police cars got the 160mph in mid '89 That is the time when the civillian Mustangs went from 85mph to 140mph

I know, I know, useless info...why couldnt I have been blessed to be able to remember good stuff, like Birthdays, Names, and anniversaries

It appears that the 140 cert. speedo that is currently in my CP is a SSP item and not a Motorsports part. Were these SSP speedo's readily available through the Ford service parts? The way it matches the other (original) gauges, it looks right at home.

Yes they were available through Ford Parts and Service Division, but not for long, I bought an '89 SSP speedo in '96 ish and it went obsolete shortly after. I am not sure what the availabilty was on that one, If you are not watching for something...Ford tends to sneak those things out from under your nose, especially since Most of the Police stuff was NOT in the Catalog and required a spy-decoder ring and a secret handshake to order "The Correct" stuff. MustangParts" might know about when that speedo was available, as he HAS the Spy-decoder ring and Definitely knows the secret handshake!!!!!!
