Which oil filter should be used on the turbo motor???? I see the listings always have a shorter filter lsted than the FL1A. Does it truely make a difference or should I stick with the books?? Or is there a clearence problem with the longer filter????

The smaller FL-300 is the correct size for the turbo engine with an oil cooler. Its also used on special service V8s with oil coolers like Highway Patrol 5.0s. I pulled a filter off of my SVO that must have been a CarQuest FL-1A size or nearly so. I couldn't even slip a strap-type wrench around it for removal.
The FL-1A gets really close to the steering shaft. On some cars it hits, on some its just really close.Last edited by 65ShelbyClone; 03-05-2006, 02:32 AM.1984 Mustang SVO 1C - E6, otherwise stock.

I've been using the shorter FL-300 now for 226,000 miles. I've never had a problem. I remember being kinda freaked out about it in 1984 the first time I crawled under to change my oil.
If you want to run the longer FL-1A you need the Merkur adaptor. The FL-1A is too long to fit without one due to the added lenght of the oil cooler bolted to the block.

Don't bother with the Merkur adapter unless you can get the proper metric sized o-ring that goes underneath the holddown bolt. I put in a o-ring that looked "close enough" and the stupid thing would never seal up right. I took it off a couple of weeks ago after dealing with a constant drip of oil coming from it. I might try it again at another oil change in the future should I get a proper o-ring for it.1986 1D - An oil return and rear end away from FINALLY being fully streetable again!
