You need to make sure that you are getting the power to the coil via the connecter that plugs into the top of it. Check your manual to see which wires need power to start.

cause I'd rather check it through the cap and rotor. I've never seen one so bad that it wouldn't pass any sparlOriginally posted by MikeFlemingUh, why? It would work either way (having some spark-testing device connected between hte coil output wire and ground (Earth in British) or from the spark plug wire to ground).
One eliminates the rotor/cap grounding as a problem.Eric C

Put the distributor in this morning, drove out to the track and drove around for about 45 minutes without a hitch. So it looks like the Napa brand PIP was not a good part.
The problem now is that the car is running very rich under boost (I can see black smoke behind me). I checked fuel pressure, 44 at idle with the vacuum line disconnected and 36-38 with the vacuum line on. I'm guessing this is too much?Craig

IIRC 38-40 psi with vac line off.. 44 sounds a little high..

Good ole NAPA parts, I had the same thing happen on my 95 SHO with a coolant sensor, about a month after I replaced it, my car started to act up. A little differnt symptoms but after it would heat up(10mins) it would run really really rough and hesitate baddd and stall. Turned out it was running really rich, pipes were black as night. Replaced with motorcraft part and it was fixed. arrrrgh....
