You need to make sure that you are getting the power to the coil via the connecter that plugs into the top of it. Check your manual to see which wires need power to start.

cause I'd rather check it through the cap and rotor. I've never seen one so bad that it wouldn't pass any sparl

I got the PIP installed in the distributor, but a storm blew in and I headed for the house. I'll finish up in the morning and see what happens...

Put the distributor in this morning, drove out to the track and drove around for about 45 minutes without a hitch. So it looks like the Napa brand PIP was not a good part.

The problem now is that the car is running very rich under boost (I can see black smoke behind me). I checked fuel pressure, 44 at idle with the vacuum line disconnected and 36-38 with the vacuum line on. I'm guessing this is too much?

IIRC 38-40 psi with vac line off.. 44 sounds a little high..

How do I adjust it? Or does it sound like the fuel pressure regulator is on it's way out?

The stock FPR it is non-adjustable. It must be replaced. There are some aftermarket FPR's that can be adjusted.

Also, make sure your gage is good. See if you have a buddy with a back-up gage just to verify (it's free!)

                  Was it running rich before?

Gauge is brand new, should be fine.

It started running rich after a new fuel filter (Motorcraft).

Good ole NAPA parts, I had the same thing happen on my 95 SHO with a coolant sensor, about a month after I replaced it, my car started to act up. A little differnt symptoms but after it would heat up(10mins) it would run really really rough and hesitate baddd and stall. Turned out it was running really rich, pipes were black as night. Replaced with motorcraft part and it was fixed. arrrrgh....

The PIP seems to have fixed the ignition problem. I drove to town tonight and back without issue.

I've ordered a new fuel pressure regulator and some other parts to see if I can cure the rich running situation...
