  • Starting on only 3 cylinders... HELP!

Ok guys. I've done a search to try to figure out my problem and have come close but nothing dead on.
My 84 has developed a tendency to start on 2 or 3 cylinders, or at least thats the way it sounds. You can hear it when the last 2 cylinder begin to fire. Very choppy at first start up, then after 5 or 10 sec it will get a little better as the cylinder begins to start firing. The last one may take up to a minute or more before it will fire. At that point the engine runs good and smooth.
This only happens when the engine is cold and most of the time it's just one cylinder that doesn't fire.Warm cranking is no problem.
Could it be a bad injector driver in the EEC or would that keep it from firing at all.
I've done a tune p with Motorcraft parts. New plugs new wires new dis cap and I've even changed injectors, and the problem persists. Am I missing something?
I hope to get the time to trouble shoot a little more this weekend.
Stupid question... Is a noid light the same as a light/curcuit tester?

mine does the same thing. i thought a sticking injector or a sticking vam. i still have the stock injectors though.
mine takes a little reving to get all four to go. anything below 60 degrees i notice this problem
i have all new MC parts too for the tuneup.

im curious what you find. i havent figured it out either.

Mine will do it if it is very cold for less than a second. If it is warm, no problem.

Mine does the same exact problem exactly as you described. I also did a complete tune-up on it which didnt help. If it is a warm day it doesnt do it. I also am clueless as to what is causing this.

Are you seeing any drop in your coolant levels by any chance?Does it smoke at all until it straightens out?

No drop in coolant levels. Dead even 140psi on all cyls. Only smoke is the typical puff of blue smoke from valve seals.

Mine seems to do it no matter what the temp.
I had to go to the bank today at lunch when it was 80 outside and it did the same thing.
It doesn't loose any antifreeze or smoke while it sputters. The only time you see anything come out the back is when I boost hard, and that looks more like gas fumes than smoke. Speaking of gas, my milage seems to have gotten worse too.
She runs strong after she's warmed up good. No problem there.
I'm at a lose. I'll let ya'll know when I find out what it is. She use to start like a sewing machine and she will again...

I'm thinking oil in the combustion chambers from bad valve seals.

That would give a lot of smoke on start up if it was enough to make the plugs stumble.

                    Todd,

Did you find the problem? Have you replaced your ingnition switch? Check to make sure the wires in the coil connector has not ben pushed out some.

Do you have another dizzy you can stick in there with a known good PIP and TFI?

Also as Mike Flemming indicated, check your fuel pressure by switching the ingnition on and off several times before starting and see if that has an effect.
