  • Bigger fuel injectors, More boost!!??

Well, I just bought an 86 SVO. And already looking to modify it. Im currently looking at a couple front mount intercooler designs.

But Im tryint to get some infomation on upgrading the fuel injectors in the car. I think it has the stock brown tops now.
(How much boost can be run on stock injectors?) The previous owner also gave me what he thinks is a set of 62 pound fuel injectors, with a wiring harness, and a Accel Calmap computer. He was too afraid to install it. Looks like a big project.

Are there other engine managment set ups out there that I should look into? try to figure out and use this calmap thing, and hook it up to a laptop? And install the wiring harness(Converts stock sensors over to GM Sensors)?

Im mostly looking to upgrade as So I can run higher boost. Right now it has the stock boost controller, and is running 15PSI.

Right now the car has a superchip installed. Also has a 155LPH fuel pump, and adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Anyone running 25PSI of boost? (I know the engine should be able to handle it, engine has been allreworked, with a bigger cam, and ARP studs)

What kind of turbo is on the car? 25psi on a stock turbo will only add extra heat. The stock turbo is functional up to ~20 psi before it starts getting out of the effeciency range.

The brown tops should be good to ~300 rwhp with a good intercooler.

Forced4.com has a ready made IC that should make your choice for a FMIC a no brainer.

You might help us give better advice with a list of the current upgrades to understand where is your starting point.

Hello and welcome to the SVOCA website!

Don't get too hung up on boost levels right off the bat. You need to define your goal and then do a few searches on this site to compare other SVO owners' successful setups.

On the Accel, I'd go find a user group that has experience with the hardware /software, and soak up all the info that you can in order to determine whether it suits your needs.

Folks here use the SDS or EEC Tuner for the most part. The Holley Commander is another one to consider.

When I installed the Forced4 FMIC kit (still using the stock boost controller), I got 3.5 to 4.5 PSI more boost with no other changes. I'd tend to attribute that to an efficient package that has low pressure drop and provides dense air. I noticed no more lag due to the extra plumbing.

You may eventually need a higher capacity fuel pump.

25 PSI? Determine why you think you need that much. Several guys at the last Reunion Dyno Day did pretty well on the rollers with 16 to 21 PSI.

        Thats good math mike.
Given the turbo i'm getting (50 trim)
The 65 lbs injectors are a good match for my combo. good thing i got those instead of 75#'s
        Thanks for the math class.

          120 / 4 = 30 Lb/hr per cylinder

          1560/12 = 130; 130/4 = 32.5 Lb/hr per cylinder (12:1 AF)

          1560/10 = 156; 156 / 4 = 39 Lb/hr per cylinder (10:1 AF)

So you can see that the injectors are very nicely matches with the turbo sizing.

very cool, i always wondered how that stuff correlated

            Turbo'd

Thanks for information thus so far.

Any suggestions as to wqhere i could find information about other who have used the Accel Calmap? Maybe I should check here..

As for the mustang I just talked to the previous owner who happens to be a friend of mine.

He said It has the stock fuel injectors which he believes are browntop's.

The car has a T3/T4 Hybrid turbo.

As far as PSI, well I wasn't necessarily saying 25PSI. But looking for more then the 15 I'm at now. Ive seen a couple Turbo controllers with the selonoid valve, so you could run 15Psi one minute, and then flick the switch and be at the next setting say 22PSI a second later.

Thats one goal, another is the FMIC. What are people's thought on the stinger performance FMIC? Compared to the Forced4? (Can I ask this? If not sorry can edit this out) I also thought of buying the stinger performance piping and using either the volvo or the Isuzu NRD intercooler.

My first thing Im trying to figure out is that my SVO has an aftermarket 4 core, or 3 core radiator. And with that, and the A/C evaporator it looks like there is no room for an intercooler. However I do like A/C, but am kinda figuring that maybe I should Save the weight and get rid of the whole A/C setup. Right now the pump isn't hooked up, but am told that it works.

Im looking to spend a little money to start getting the parts I need for the winter, to build on the car a little. And looking to learn As I go on.

My plans with the car, is use as a daily driver(Good Gas mileage compared to my othermonster jeep), yet have the ability to put up a good fight with another high perfomance car, with track racing on weekeneds.

It has a mild Cam, ported and polished head and exhaust manifol, bored 30 over engine. T3/T4 hybrid turbo, ford motorsports rearend with 3:55 gearing, rebuilt 5spd with higher 5th gear ratio, guage pod with boost, and oil pressure guage. 3, or 4 core radiator.

He told me he believes it is putting out a solid 325 horsepower. Definetly one fast light car, outhandles corvettes and some porches but only sees there tails on the straightaway's.

With the Forced4 complete kit, you can keep your AC and bolt it in with little or no modification. I don't think you can say the same thing about the stinger setup. Forget about a volvo intercooler, it is not very efficient. The NPR has been used with success.

My guess is you are maybe making 325 ponies at the flywheel, but not at the rear wheels with the setup you described.

First off, whats your goal HP wise ?

Get a decent 255 fuel pump FIRST....that 155 aint gona take you far. As for the other stuff, it sounds as if you have a pretty damned good base to tune on.

Some questions that probably need to be looked into from the other owner...
                1) Flow numbers on the head ?
                2) Comp. ratio on the rebuilt motor ?

As for the Calmap....isnt that just the software ? Or did he provide a complete DFI system for you ? Please dont take offence to this, but it kinda sounds as if you need to get familiar with the cart first before you put the horse in front of it.

What I mean by that is get to a dyno, or the track and get a base-line. Then play with the parts that you have on the car to maximize them. (ie: optimizing engine timing, cam timing, manipulating fuel pressure, boost levels... etc..etc.. )

All very good advice and naturally Mike jumps in with all sorts of great techincal explanations, before I even open the thread.
