  • AC Compressor\Pulley Help

    All,
I could use some help here.

There seems to be a loose part near the outside of my compressor pulley that is making a rubbing noise as the friction from the pulley slowly moves it around.

These pics will help (These are not pics of my car)

AC.jpg shows the area of interest
    ACMag is the area magnified.

ACMag shows the piece that is now loose and is slowly turning around the pulley causing MUCH friction.

The piece at the end with the yellow "N"s does not move, and as far as I know should not.

Do I need a new compressor? Pulley? Both?

That is your compressor clutch. The part with the "N" on it should be able to turn with the belt removed. The part marked with red should be attached to said part with spring steel bands via rivets. You can buy one at advance auto or similar. You will also need to get the shim kit. I got mine from parts america.com. If the rivets are still in place, then it is most likely that the proper amount of shims where not used.

On mine, the rivet broke through and caused a heck of noise.

How do I know whether I have a type Tecumseh or type York clutch?

It also says type 1 and type 2....

Any way to tell what I have?

      Thanks for the help!!!

My opinion, go to a junk yard and find the same clutch off a wrecked car and use it. the clutch portion rarely goes bad. the compressor on the other hand sucks.
*Note to self. Be nice yours still works*

The stock SVO compressor is a Tecumseh HR980. You need the clutch hub:

Ready-Aire Clutch Hub New Part Number: 1952

          and the shim kit:

Factory Air Shim Kit Part Number: 24181

What is involved in replacing this thing?

            Do I need special tools?

Will I have to mess with the AC lines?

I'm assuming the shims go in a particular order....

An air ratchet with a 13 mm socket as I recall will make removing the nut a little easier, but it is not necessary. There is install instructions that come with the shim kit. The shims go between the clutch hub and the end of the shaft.

No need to mess with any AC lines, etc.

                OK, Parts are in...

But the nut will NOT come off. It spins just as freely as the bolt it is on, which spins with the hub. There seems to be no way to get the "bolt" to stay in place to get the nut off. I can turn the nut and bolt all day, but it just seems to spin the "shaft".

                Does this make any sense?

On another note, this is stupid, but how do you get the belt off of the AC pulley?

                Thanks for the help...

You will need to use an air impact or similar to get the nut off. There is a key that may have sheared that locks the clutch hub to the shaft. You need to hold against the clutch plate somehow.

To remove the AC belt, loosen both AC bracket bolts and use 1/2 drive ratchet or breaker bar in the square hole to move the AC.

Careful, you might shear the compressor shaft off. It is a small diameter and not really too strong. You have to hold the "clutch" while removing the small nut. There is a tool for this, but I'm sure you can get it off. I forget the torque but I think it is like 10 lbs when you get to putting it back on. Find out for sure. The Nut is part# N80237S36M.
