  • removing flywheel?

What's the trick to stop the flywheel from turning while you're trying to loosen the bolts to remove it?

My goal for this weekend is to finally get the engine mounted on the engine stand so I can start working on it. The flywheel is the only thing stopping me!

Get a fly wheel wrench. its tool that grabs the teeth and has a lever so you can stop the fly wheel. any parts store should have one for rental or purchase.
WIthout it, i don't know how you could do it. Maybe impact?

I always use an impact,, loosens the bolts right up..

I alwyas use an air impact to remove but when you reinstall it you will need something to hold it when you install it to the proper torque specs. When reinstalling I have someone hold back on the crank pulley bolt.

Got them off. New bolts go on the to-do list, check. I might go with an aluminum flywheel if I decide to get fancy. Seems like a good thing to decide BEFORE I get it stuffed in the car. It would be one of the most difficult things to change later.

              Made it onto the stand!

Well, we're one step closer to actually getting something done now

Looking good Stef! I am working on purchasing a 74 mach 1 out of Washington. It was on Ebay last week and no one bid on it for 2K! I am 2400 miles away tho, and am trying to sell my 76 ghia so I can go get it! Race ya' when if I get it! Interesting swap you are doing. If I get the car, I may consider the same thing if it works well for you. Good luck!

BTW, barring any unforseen difficulties, when do you figure the swap will be complete?

I don't want to put it in until after body and paint, and I'm still saving my pennies for that. So I'm looking at maybe a year out.

I just used a big honking screwdriver to hold the flywheel.

i need to order about new bolts for the flywheel on my rebuild now that you mention it. does anyone know if there is a 'bolt kit' for the 2.3 that has everything in it so i can save myself some hair loss in the future?
