  • Which spark plugs? Iridium, or platinum?

Allright, about time for me to do a tune-up. Which plugs should I get? Anyone use Iridiums, if so, what kinda, and part number?

    What platinum do people recomend.

My car is fairly new to me, Head has been ported and polished with mild cams, engine has been bored, and Turbo is a T3T4 hybrid. I dont know if any of that info would sway someone to choose one kind over another. I would think Iriums would last a lot longer, and be a lot less likely to keep from any detonation problems, however isn't detonation a good thing as the spark plugs are like a fuse to protect the engine?

    Thanks

On an iron head, standard motorcraft are the only way to go. Do a search. It's been covered before.

Platinum plugs are bad for ANY application involving increased cylinder pressures. I've seen first hand what nitrous can do to a set of platinum plugs and it ain't pretty. Thank goodness it wasn't my motor!!

If you change your plugs on a regular basis, there's not much benefit in running platinum or iridium plugs anyway. Motorcraft, Autolite or NGK copper plugs all work well in these motors and are all far more economical choices to boot.

We have switched over to the Autlolite equivalent (764) to the stock Motorcraft plug due to several problems with hairline cracks in the insulators of recent Motorcraft plugs.

Stay with stock type plugs and save $$$.

Funny. I had a batch of plugs that had cracks too. Seems to have settled down now but it was a rough couple of weeks with returns.

Is there a motorcraft plug that fits the aluminum heads that requires the washer type seat?

GAboy, look at a spark plug out of your 300ZX TT. It may be just what you need.

I've got the NGK iridiums specified by Rapido, but I want to try the Motorcraft to see if there is a difference.

Mike, what plug gap are you using on your iridiums?
