  • wastegate adjustment question..

As always.. thanks gentleman for all the knowledge.

My car. If I run permium fuel, and turn my switch to the on position... I get more spark knock than normal, and the car will hit the boost buzzer quickly under "semi - hard " acceleration. I talked to the previous/pervious owner and he said that he always used premium fuel and ran with the switch on. The car has an adjustable wastegate, and I am wondering if the man that bought the car from my friend, before I bought it has fooled with the adjustable wastegate thinking that maybe he would be getting more boost out of the car.

Would it be an adjustable gate problem? The car runs better with the switch OFF.

How can you adjust an adjustable wastegate? I would think that it would be a lot of trial and error.

For now, the car runs fine with the switch off, and with premium gas.... it's just wierd.. I would think that the timing adjustment would make the car run better, and not worse...

    Thanks for your help!

first thing to ask , -- what mods have been done to the car

next 2 things to ask is how much boost are you running, and what is the timing set at (with the spout removed)

After that, Where are you getting your gas? -- it is sad to say, but some places fill their 93 tank with the exact same gas that goes into their 87 tank. -- it is good to see if other places make the problem worse or better.

    last thing..
when you say adjustable waste gate, do you really mean adjustable boost controler ? adjustable waste gates are available, but I would think you wouldn't mess with it once it was adjusted, And it wouldn't cause detonation, it would just cause the boost not to come on, or to be on all the time.

Mods on the car... from what I have been told..

Chip, adjustable wastegate, HKS turbo timer, high flow cat, with glasspacks for mufflers, steeda springs and that's about it.

As far as the timing goes, I do not know, and as far as the boost goes, I can only go by what the guage says... ( total novice here with boost, and electronics.. )

I will usually run Amoco Premium because it seems to have the best reputation. I just don't understand if you are susposed to run the premium switch on with that gas, why do I have spark knock, and why does it make the buzzer hit so soon? I can see that timing would be related to the spark knock, but would timing be related to the buzzer? .....building boost faster?

I know I am stupid.. All I know is between the turbo and the IC is an added piece where you can take a wrench and make adjustments to the wastegate... I was told it was added to the car, adjusted and left alone. Have no clue how to adjust it, but if it needs adjusting.. I want it done right.

      Thats the low down..

        well ,

I can tell you that the boost buzzer should go off at about 17 psi.

I can tell you that the timing should be set to 10 deg

It sounds like the "thing between the intercooler and turbo" would be a blow off valve, which is probably not the problem. (it's not the waste gate)

You may however need to turn the boost down a bit. If it is pushing over 18 psi, 93 octane may not be quite enough.

It sounds like you have a highly modified car. Things are not always going to work as stock when a car has been modified such as this one sounds like it has.

Coming back from the reunion, I got a tank of 93, and was pinging bad by the time i hit the interstate.

Gas can make a huge difference. even on a stock car, and can make a bigger difference on a modified one.

So.. how high does the boost gauge go when you romp on it ?

I love it.... translation for those of us who are boost -i-capped....

I'll drive it.. and look at it and let you know...

          Thanks Eric... !

How much boost when you romp?

            Well.. drove it...

It bottoms out just at the red line.. I assume 16-17 lbs.

Never got the buzzer... yet I am not one to over-rev... ( All those years of driving a 67 GT 390... )

... I thought fun was driving that 67... little did I know. It is just amazing what a hoot the SVO is to drive.. ( less $$ too!)

ok.. don't sound like you are getting into a lot of boost...

here is a list of stuff I would do

              check the timing
check the vam, intercooler, and hoses for oil
check your plugs and wires (gap plugs at about .30)
and probably the first thing I would do it to try another gas station's 93 octane.

How much boost should I be getting?

That is with the switch in the off position. It seemed to bottom out just past the yellow, and into the redline.

What is a VAM? And how can I check the IC for oil?

I may be repeating things for you, don't take it as an insult if I am.

First, with the Premium switch off, with a stock system you should be getting 10 lbs of boost.

With the premium switch on and lit, with a stock system you should be getting 14-15 lbs of boost. I believe the timing curve is more advanced with the premium switch on.

Second, if the boost gauge is sitting between the yellow and red zone, that is 15 psi of boost. With a stock system, You should hit this much boost when the fuel switch is on, if you are getting this much boost when the fuel switch is off, then your boost has been increased by the adjustable wastegate, and you probably peg the gauge when the fuel switch is on.

Adjustable wastegates are easy to adjust, but you are right, it is a lot of trial and error... thats what we call tinkering...

I get some detonation with my 86 SVO running 14.5 psi of boost, so I have never tried anything higher. My advice would be to leave the switch so you max out at 15 psi. If you want to go higher, get some good gas, like 104 or 110 octane and go play. Other people seem to have had better results with increasing the boost, my car just seems to detonate slightly at factory boost levels when it is warm outside.

Well.. with the premium gas and the switch off she is hitting the 15 to 17 psi. So I the wastegate must have been adjusted in this situtation.

I guess with turning the switch on, and possible over adjustment of the wastegate she is just getting there too fast and maybe over boosting. Maybe with the over boost, and advanced timing you are right, 93 octane just is not enough.

I will continue to tinker with this, and see if I can get things adjusted a little better.

What oil do most people run? Is synethic better in these cars for turbo lubrication?

I appreciate the info.. I just could not figure out why the car was running *worse* with the premium switch on.

It sounds like you have a aftermarket boost controler.

this means your boost in not turning down when you flip the switch, but the timing is... (which is why it don't detonate on low)

I also re-read your original post... your car has a chip in it...

I have no experience with them personally, but have heard several people say they have had problems with detonation after installing a chip.

This probably happens because people burning them are setting them up for race only cars, that normally run 100 - 104 octane gas. Basically, they are setting the timing curves too aggressive.

Back to that oil thing i menioned earlier, just take the hose that runs from the Intercooler to the throttle body off, and see if it has oil in it.

to bounce back to turbo basics for just a sec...

the attached pic is of the waste gate assembly..

I really don't think what you are talking about has anything to do with the waste gate.

here's a thread that has a pic of Andy's engine compartment. I couldn't see if he has an adjustable boost vavle or aftermarket wastegate....maybe your eyes are better than mine

                            Turbo Education...

Thanks for all your input. I am attaching a picture of my engine... do you see the brass looking adjuster to the left of the IC? I am assuming that is an adjuster for the wastegate.. I do not see it in pictures of original engines, and feel that it has been added...

You keep asking me to check the oil going into the IC... do you think I have a problem? Would the turbo be bad with 43k? This car has been taken very good care of ( documented ) and the turbo seems to build boost and pull pretty hard... Maybe I need somebody to drive the car and tell me what they think.. My first SVO, and I have nothing to compare it to !

                            Thanks for the education guys..

that's a boost valve andy - not your wastegate. turn it to the left 2 or 3 turns. Then take it for a blast down the road. Keep an eye on your boost gauge....and report back with your findings

btw - oil in the inlet hoses has NOTHING to do with your turbo being bad.
