  • Help, on a 3G alternator upgrade install.

Allright, Ive done a lot of research so, I thought. I found quite a few topics, here about this.
So I thought I would go ahead, and do it. I went to the local junkyard to pickup a used 3g alternator. The one I picked up was from a 94 Ford F-150 pickup. I got all the wires, I needed for the install.

And this morining trying to bolt it up, it wont fit. Now I know the bracket is suppose to need trimming, but this doesn't even come close to the bracket. ?And I have one end installed where the long bolt slides through, but the other end wont reach the other bracket to bolt up. The bracket Im talking about is the one where the stock alternator is adjusted to adjust the belts tension.

Do I have a wrong alternator? I found a list of different vehicles, in which would work, (For instance off the T-bird site) This one was suppose to be one of them. It doesn't even say how many amps it is.

Im not so sure I can just return that used alternator back. Becuase it was ordered from another savage yard.

Im thinking of going to the local napa, around the corner and ordering one. (Expensive) But not so sure that if they have to order one for me, that that will fit.

Am I doing something wrong? Wrong alternator possibily? What vechiel should I order a 130 amp altenator for to get the right one?

    Thanks

Here is a quote from another thread. Credits to SVOEric for the research.

This is the 95 amp 3G list I have.
I prefer the 95 amp (small case), as it has the same size case as the stock alternator, and don't require any grinding.

My 3G came from a aerostar, for $35, then I bought a $40 rebuild kit.

]No the bolts aren't loose on that bracket. Do they need to be?

It does almost look like if I took out the bolt towards the center of the engine then the alternator would fit. But I didn't see that written anywhere.

I have a 94 lightning and it doesnt have the 3G alt. As NavySVO pointed out they come on the F-250, F-350 and the E line of vans.

Nothing from an F150 will work. I'm assuming that you pulled one from a 300 I-6.
It has a ~8" mounting pattern compared to the 7" pattern found on the Mustang.

V8 F150s use the same 3 bolt mount as the Ranger/Explorer if I'm not mistaken.

                No Echo's Here

I undertsand about the different alternator choices. I found this list on a couple sites for the 3G install:

Here is a list of vehicles that have the 3G alternator, most are 130A, but some might be 110A:

                95-96 Windstar 3.0 V-6 (most are 3.8's)

                96 Sable 3.0 V-6
                94-96 Cougar 3.8 V-6

*Probably the best one if you can get it (should be easy to find, too) is off the E/F series...this series uses a threaded top ear like the stocker on the Mustang....E/F series with threaded ear uses metric bolt. ALSO, make sure the E/F series is 130 Amps and NOT 95.

The one I picked up is from 94 f150, with the 4.9L 6CYL. It doesn't fit. Seems like the mounting bolts are to close together, alternator to small.

Its looking like I should just go visit my friends over at Napa. I was just trying to save myself some money. But In the long run probley isn't worth it, since there alternators have a lifetime replacement warranty.
