  • Coolant in the exhaust, need troubleshooting help

I am helping out Joe Kuhls (Joe_kuhls) with his 86 9L and it has a weird problem.

There is definitely coolant coming out the exhaust in a bad way.

Compression check came back with ~115psi in each cylinder.

The oil is clean and the coolant is clean no mixing of the other. Leads me to believe that its NOT the head gasket.

Can see coolant leaking from the turbo to E6 seal and from the wastegate hinge on the turbo elbow.

Pulled the E6 & turbo off, definitely cooling in the lower part of the E6 log, the DP is wet. The exhaust ports appear to be dry.

This is the first time I've ever seen this problem. My guess the water passage in the turbo housing cracked and is leaking into the hot side of the impeller.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, why didn't the compression test come back with one cylinder off?

My bet is in the CHRA. He doesn't have an air compressor to check if it is leaking.

Update: pressure tested CHRA. Good to go, no leaks. #3 cyl spark plug was wet. Next step, head coming off.

I would do a leakdown test next. I used to use an old block tester that would verify the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant also...Unfortunately I went thru a few sets of head gaskets dialing in my old 5.0 with the blower...

If I had a leak down tester that would have got it. Upon pulling the head, #3 cyl ring on the HG blew into an adjacent coolant passage. That explains everything.

First time I've seen a HG failure of that nature before. It was a stock replacement unit too, not a 1035 or a cometic unit.

That is the same place mine was leaking. I also had a new head gasket. I was getting about 120 psi on #3 compared to 145 on the others. I will only use ARP studs on all my 2.3 Lima engines.
