....A common problem is an open coil on the cooling fan relay.....Another problem can also occur when the wire retaining tabs break in the connector for the harness. This can cause intermittent ground problems that can cause burning of the circuit board & even an open in a relay....
On my '85 "budget" project that I just picked up, I had high resistance at the relay armature contact. A little cleaning with some emery cloth - good to go. This was after I also figured out that the PO had somehow managed to connect to temp switch connector to the "I" terminal of the starter relay.
