  • Oil Leak Question

I noticed an oil leak on the SVO and finally crawled under it and found that the oil supply line was leaking around the inside of the brass fitting. I pulled the oil supply line, sending unit, and aluminum fitting off and found none of the threads to be damaged. I did notice that on the turbo supply side of the aluminum fitting there appeared to be some caked/cooked oil on the bevel where it meets the flare of the supply line.

Would the cooked/caked oil be enough to cause a leak?
Is it possible that the teflon type tape got old and caused it to leak?
Being a flared fitting do I even need to use teflon tape/thread sealer ?

I thought about replacing it with a flexible steel braided line but the idea of the rubber hose and heat don't appeal to me. Plus the supply line I have appears to be a fairly new and still has the Ford sticker on it.

If you mean the large hex adapter on the head, there is no aluminum or brass at the oil line connection. It's a steel hex with a pipe thread going in to the head (OK to use carefully some teflon sealer or tape on the threads). A 1/4" steel inverted male swivel on the stainless oil supply line threads in to it at the bottom (no, teflon won't seal the oil leak there). The seal is at the flare, not the threads. On the top, teflon would help seal the threads on the oil sending unit. Many times the sending units have sealer on the threads to begin with. Inspect the flare on the tube for cracks just in case it may have been overtightened in the past.

Yes it is a steel fitting. It was leaking around the flare of the oil supply line. I hope that cleaning it will fix the problem if not I will have to bend up a new supply line.

Thanks for the info Mike, I didn't know that the 45-degree flares lost integrity after being tightened who knows how many times.

I will be going the AN-style fittings and flexable steel braided lines, which I didn't want to do, but I guess regular check ups will keep me safe.

Well with the purchase of couple -4an aeroquip fittings I was able to re-route my oil supply line away from the heat of the exhaust. Car is again up and running. Thanks for the help
