  • SVO 7.5 Rear, FMS 8.8 Rear

What size axles come in the SVO? 28 Spline? Will the Ford Motorsport M-4006-B373 8.8 rear end, without axles and brakes, work in a SVO with the SVO parts (axles & brakes)?

Yes, SVO Mustangs come with the 28 spline axles...and yes, they will work in the FMS 8.8 inch rear end.

Yes, the 8.8 inch FMS rear end will work with the stock SVO brakes and backing plates.

The only problem I had when i did this swap on my SVO was the brake line from the body to the center of the axle. The bracket doesn't quite line up. I wound up using a stock 5.0 L V8 Fox Mustang brake line, and drilled a hole in the differential for the brake line bracket to make it work. I didn't have any other problems. Overall, it was a worth while and relatively easy swap.

      Rear end differences

I've heard people talk that the SVO rear end is wider than a regular rear end by 1-1/2". Is this just due to the axles being longer? Or is the rear end housing longer? I'm just wanting to find out if the Ford racing 8.8 rear end M-4006-B373 will fit in the SVO. CP86SVO, I'm hoping that you meant this particular rear end in your reply, but I didn't want to assume anything. Thanks for any input,

housing is the same as any FOX body...axles longer on the SVO by 1.25 inches per side.

Yes, the M4006 B373 rear axle assemby is the one you want to use...it's the one I used in my conversion...it is the correct one.

Wouldn't an axle housing from a wrecking yard Turbo T-Bird (with the SVO axle shafts and brakes installed) accomplish the same thing at a greatly reduced cost?

And a lot more rust. Remember Pat, April 18th is show time.

              Just weighing some options.

I scrubbed on the bottom of my car for two weekends before Knott's last year and nobody ever even looked underneath it. I'm actually considering entering and bringing the RUSTANG SVO this year just for giggles. After all, I did challenge AT6SVO to the "BEATER" title this year, and if I have to make him buy a round of beer for us at Fuddruckers, so much the better.

There you have it. The gauntlet has been flung. I think I'll go out in the morning and water down my entry!

(Only partially kidding of course. I think it would be neat to show the RUSTANG as it is now, and then show up next year as an example of before and after!)

I have shown my car many times in the MCA unrestored class and I don't clean the bottom side. Talking with the judges, they check the wheels and fender wells mostly. Yes, I do clean and wax the shocks/stuts. For anything rusty like springs or sway bars, hit them with wd40 or armoral to give them a natual unrusty look. Yes, you will lose a few points but not enough to matter.

Now where it get tricky is when you start getting into the restored or restomod classes. There, some will have the whole done up in trailer queen mode. Popular vote classes again will side with the trailor queens.

I wish our cars had a decent finish on the undercarriage parts to make it worth cleaning up.

There's no official judging at Knott's. It's just an excuse for a few thousand Ford owners to have the biggest block party on the west coast.
