  • Cylinder head shop in Los Angeles or O.C.

Hi, just purchased a Boport stage 1.5 roller cam, big valves and all the valve train stuff for my '86 SVO. Just wondered if anybody knows of a good machine shop in Los Angeles or Orange County that can prep the head for new valve seats and a little porting. Thanks - Scott

Are you against having Bo set it up?

      Starman,
Down the road from you is powerheds. if you dont want Bo to do it they may be a consideration. I have had good luck with them but others have horror sotories. I am sure Pat will chime in since he is local.

First off, I tend to agree with Ken. Boport is the most active cylinder head guy out there who is current in pumping time and research into 2.3 Turbo top ends. He has also recently become a supporting vendor of SVOCA, giving paid members a discount.

There are a couple folks I would trust who are local to the southland. Slover is in Sun Valley and has done many 2.3 heads over the decades. He has done work for several members here. I have taken heads to him since 1974. Then you have Joe Morgan, who can send the head to his most trusted machinist and will setup the final assembly himself.

Thanks for the info; Bo is great but you can't send him your cylinder head anymore to be rebuilt but have to buy a complete one. I know he does awesome work but I can't afford the $1,800 plus tax and shipping right now. Also, I've heard some bad stuff about Powerheads on turbo ford so I'll give Slover's Porting a shout to see if I can do this for less money. Appreciate the help, Scott.

Your economic stimulus check should probably cover the big valve seats. Maybe even a valve job!

STAY AWAY FROM POWERHEADS!!!!!!!! They are shotty at best. I purchased a 2.3 ported and polished head from them a while back. When I was having the valve area cut my guy noticed something weird. Well it turn out that they "pinned" the number 2 and 3 cylinder due to cracks.

Here's the kicker, first they never told me it was "repaired", second, they F&*$ing denied me 2 cores because they were "cracked". I had the second one magnafluxed just to make sure and those assclowns still denied me the core. The pinned head will probably run just fine. It's the selling me a "good" head that was cracked and they fact that they denied me the cores I will NVEVER trust or do business with them again. I called a couple of times to see if they would make right on the deal. I got the runaround every time.

On that note, BO has my esssy SVO head right now. I'm 100% sure he will do it right!!!

Slovers is still around? I've heard good things about him. A lot of the local street racers from back in the day used his services.

Charlie Slover the dad is retired, but his son moved into a larger shop with more up to date machinery about a year ago. If you saw all the jobs going on in the shop, you would be amazed.

How recent is this? i can't see Boport turning down business on porting heads. Or even machine work.......

                      Something doesn't sound right.

Thanks again for the advice everyone; I'm going to have the job done right and put my $600 dollar stimulus package to work and throw that in to have Bo do some mild porting along with the hardened seats for the big valves I already purchased from him. I'll send my existing cylinder head up later to cover the core.
