  • Blow By Smell in Cabin

Again with my new purchase of a 1986 SVO. I have the smell of blow by in
the cabin upon start up coming through the air vents. There is no smoke coming out of the exhaust so I hope that valve guides are ok - but - any ideas on a solution? The setup looks to be stock with the rear vent in the valve cover having a vented cap. The vented cap has a hose that goes to the VAM I believe.

Car has been completely stripped and going for paint this week and would like to tackle the blow by smell next.

Thanks in advance for the assist!

It should be routed to a hose and hard line that goes to the turbo compressor scroll.
Look on the other side of the engine where the dipstick is and see if oil is present there.

      Blow BY Smell

So if the rear valve cover hole has a breather with a hose attached is that correct, or, is it just the hose to a "no breather" PVC valve?

I'll check the dipstick too -thanks.

the rear port on the valve cover has a closed breather with a hose attached to it. Then there is a 3/8"(?) hard line attached to the hose and is threaded into the turbo compressor scroll.

The PCV valve is between the distr. and the block and goes into the intake

          Blow By Blues

The previous owner has a breather that is open style and a hose attachment, so I'm sure then engine is venting throught the "foam" part of the breather and that is why I smell the Blow By.

You guys are great! Thanks again for the response.

OK, I checked again and was mistaken. The PCV is a sealed unit. It has a hose connection going to a metal line to the turbo. Also, no oil is coming out of the dipstick.

How about the oil pressure sender/turbo oil line junction which is on the back of the block, near the dipstick?

Mine has always friggin' leaked right there.

The engine doesn't leak any oil. Would this junction let blow by come out too?

Try disassembling the intake tract (VAF meter, VAF hose, Intercooler and spray FI cleaner down the TB/intake) and cleaning everything out real good and see if it makes a difference.

Take a look at the turbo oil feed line connection to the center section. The brass fitting can leak there. The oil is vaporized by the hot turbo and you would get an oil smell.

Bob, I may meet up with another SVO buddy or two after the July 4 weekend near El Segundo. If your car is out of the paint shop, maybe we could schedule a get together to check out the oil vapor issue.

                              Meeting

                              Hi Pat:

Thanks for the offer of a care pack, very interested to know the details. I should be around the 4th, not quite sure if the car will be apinted. Also, just to set expectations, my car will not be show quality here.....I intend it to be driven. My current paint plan is One Day in Torrance. The car had some previous body work and their 5yr warranty seems to make sense to me. Any other thoughts on paint/painters in the area?
