  • overheat fan problems

got my car running very good today and now I have to address the overheating issue.

My car has a dual fan setup that I believe is from a T/C as the sticker on it says 2.3L Turbo.

All the hoses look new and there doesn't seem to be any leaks.

When the car was overheating I noticed that the fan wasn't on. After a little bit of trying to cool the radiator down the fans would kick on for like 3 secs and then turn off. Then a few minutes would go by and they would kick on again.

So I'm guessing it has something to do with the heat sensor but I have no idea what I'm looking for because this isn't the stock fan setup.

I think if I had instructions on how to wire this system I might be able to look it over and figure something out. Any other help with this would be much appreciated.

    Jim

P.S. here is a pic I have of the motor that somewhat shows the fan system. Pic wouldn't upload said "Failed" will try later

It would help to see what you have. For instance if you have a TC setup and the fans are wired into a LA TC computer for high and low speed Vs checking the usual stuff on the SVO. The ss relay under the dash may be one of the first places to check. As always search is your friend and this topic is well covered. Do the fans kick on in the AC position?

Thanks for the response. I've searched all over and haven't found anything useful yet. I'll attach some pictures and take some more as the ones I do have aren't really great for seeing the fan.

I did a little more looking and found a relay on the radiator itself and one of the wires was buried behind the battery and not connected to anything and the other wires either go to the battery or the wiring harness.

Try this thread http://www.svoca.com/forum/showthrea...ual+fan+switch . It has some wiring diagrams and reference material in it. It should get you started. Don't know what your level of ability is, but check out the info because it references the SVO and the LA3.

          good references thanks.

Well I took a stab at the green wire from the relay and connected it to +bat and the fans turn on. Don't know if it tells me any other than the fans work.

That particular wire was lying by the back of the drivers side head light where I found two bare wires. One of the wires is black and the other is tanish with a yellow stripe.

There is also a wire that runs up to the firewall and connects to a red wire. I'm guessing this could be the fan turn on switch that may run to the relay under the dash or maybe just a power wire. Guess I'll have to warm it up and see what the reading is on that wire.

I tried a continuity check on the wire at the firewall with the one I found under the dash that is tapped into...the wire is Black w/ yellow dashes on it. It seems that they are connected, but my VOM meters battery died so I'm not sure.

does anybody know what kind of reading I should get out of this wire (I'm assuming this is the one that turns the fan on)?

            Thanks,

            Jim

P.S. Until I resolve this it is a manual switch.

              Here's the wiring diagram. http://pictures.rothfam.com/svo/images/fan/fan-ctrl.jpg .

Since the fans are working, look at the coolant fan switch. What year is the SVO? It could have 1 wire or two. This is an interesting thread on the coolant fan switch and getting the right part number http://www.svoca.com/forum/showthrea...ant+fan+switch
Try grounding the wire from the switch, the fans should come on.

NE1 know how the fan relay should be hooked up?

I have a BU-5083 relay, with the following terminals:

                87
                86 87a 85
                30

Currently #87 is connected to a 25Amp fuse that runs to the fans
                #86 is connected to ground
                #87a is not connected
#85 two wires one to fans and one not connected. If I apply power to the green the fans come on.
                #30 To battery Pos side.

From what I understand is that when the engine heats up the fan control switch connects its output to ground. So I'm assuming that this is hooked up wrong.

My guess would be that #30 terminal should be connect to the factory fan turn on lead and that #85 should go to power.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
