  • EGR tube Elimination Question

    Hi,

I'm replacing my cracked E3 with an E6, problem is that the EGR tube is welded solid to the fitting in the E3 manifold with Rust. Attempts to remove it have been unsuccessful. My state does not require emissions after 25 years so I was thinking of plugging the EGT tube ports on the manifold and the EGR. I have a three inch exhaust with an aftermarket hi-flow cat. I read in one post that this may mess-up timing. Is this true, if so what can be done to fix it? I understand that I can buy the parts, wait a couple of weeks to get them, but this seems like a good way to cool the intake temp.

    Thoughts

Has anyone actually don’t this mod, if so what were your results?

    Thanks

I took mine off several years ago because of the same situation. I made a plate to block the hole in the intake using a gasket as a template. I didn't notice any ill effects.

I feel your pain. At the 08 reunion I lost a turbo(actually it was Mitches fault) and fortunately Bas was able to supply one at a very attractive price. The evening replacement went fairly well except for two items, the egr fitting and a bolt in the oil drain flange. Getting that fitting loose added hours and we tried every trick in the book and a few I had not heard of. I was surprised the fitting was usable and didn't leak upon reinstallation.

In answer to your question though you will find the deleting the EGR will make the engine run hotter. The fitting will come out just keep at it. Use the proper socket or wrench, a 6 point not 12. Heat and soak it in PBR, wax, ect and get some help. Strike the manifold with a ball peen to set up a resonance while applying torque to the fitting to turn it out.

Any idea why it would be hotter?

            From some previous posts.
A blocked EGR system will lead to increased detonation. EGR contains no fuel or oxygen, thus is inert to the burning process. It does however increase chamber pressure without adding heat to the burning process and acts as a charge dilutant, thus slowing the speed of the flame front. Same thing a higher octane fuel would do (that is, slow the flame speed). The EEC assumes the EGR system is functioning and does indeed advance ignition timing during certian part-throttle modes and, in most cases, pinging will result when there is no actual EGR flow, most engines will exhibit increased detonation under part throttle with the EGR defeated. Your pinging may vary, but expect there to be noticable pinging in the mid-throttle ranges in the 2-4K RPM ranges. This will have no effect on WOT conditions.

Just the regular Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Acid Reflux, Sinus stuff, and nerve rebuild meds. I try to avoid the pain killers I have (morphine and percocet) because they block you up. But sometimes (like now) my left arm gets cramps from typing and I might take a couple. My only regular pain killer is lemon/sugar juice and vodka. Ummmm

Darn it NavySVO! Does he want my EGR or morphine?
The pipes are available. I paid 25 at a show, drop me a couple and we are good.
PM address. I'll do it as soon as I can but I have operation problems.

The heat wrench is your friend. Not a propane torch either... A REAL torch. Will let you get it outta there like magic!

                              Got IT!

I was able to get the fitting apart after days of soaking it in rust buster, and using a monky wrench to get the grip needed.
