Umm, grade 8 is a hardness designation for USS or SAE (American inch/fraction) threaded fastners. The fastners we are dealing with are metric, whose hardness numbers are 8.8, 10.2, 12.?. A metric 8.8 is much softer than an american grade 8(more like an american grade 5).

I apologize in advance if it sounds like I'm trying to pee in your cornflakes. That is not my intention. I'm just pointing out one of the many differences between metric and standard fastners.

              ok you joe-toe's

I simply went to NAPA and got those studs that are coarse on one end and fine on the other. I put the coarse end into the manifold and got some matching fine threaded exhaust manifold nuts that were non locking along with locktite. My instructor said this was the best way to do it. On my buddys 84 we did the same thing but we used grade 8 nuts on his and we've been on them for a few thousand miles now, no probs. Should probably check looseness on them to be sure of it. Sorry if i didn't do it right but seems to be working for now.

As far as how to remove/install the studs: well if the two nuts thing wont work try using needle nose vise grips on the flat part of the stud, it works GREAT.

At what temp does blue locktite melt?

                    manifold studs

some people have all the luck. i just removed the studs from an e-6 2 days ago it took a torch, large vice, an excellent stud remover(not cheap) and a 1/2 drive break-over-bar. and all during this operation i held my breath as i could just feel the stud snapping of leaveing me holding the stud in one hand and ________!
                    thanks

                        turbo studs

i just bought 4 of the cummins studs and nuts. the studs are the exact length of the originals.
the nuts have built in release preventers.
                        the stud # is 3818823.
                        the nut #is 3818824.

the nuts are very reasonable but the studs are kind of pricy if you have to pay list price
