  • 2.25" tail pipes

Well I have been wanting to change my exhaust to dual tail pipes, and as any enthusiast am always looking for ways to save money when the thought crossed my mind of using stock SS tailpipes from a mustang LX came to mind. I havent looked to hard for them, but it seems like if I found someone with a set in their garage collecting dust, I could get them pretty cheap. I thought of 2.5" and may still go that route but my car now, and a few others I've heard, have a single 3" pipe from turbo to tip, others have 2.5" tails, now if the 3" pipe gives adequate flow for these cars then I could split the 3" into 2.25" and not loose any flow. Has anyone done this with good results to back up my theory?

    How I got there:

pieRsquared = the area of a circle so
    3" dia) 3.14 x 1.5 squared = 7.065 square inches
    dual 2.25" dia) 3.14 x 1.125 squared = 3.974 x 2 pipes = 7.94 square inches
Obviously with 2 pipes instead of 1 there would be a little more surface friction along the pipe walls but I think this would have little to no effect on the flow.

This is a fairly common mod. Some will say save the weight and go with a single 3" all the way. Me, I prefer the balanced look of the twin pipes.

BTW, if your looking for one I have a complete 86 SVO twin exhaust from downpipe to tailpipes. The mufflers would need replacing but the Y-pipe and tailpipes are in very nice shape. PM me if interested.

I figured this out as well and will not change anything from the "Y" backward, keeping the 2.25"'s, when I go to the 3" from the "Y" forward. And it doesn't make any sense to go to the dual 2.5"'s as you're not dumping into pressure but, the opposite.

I also agree with the balanced rear exit duals as opposed to the single 3" exit: nothing like being symetrical.
      Good thinking guys!

one other thing is the tight fit of the 3" around the axle, plus I'd like to lower the car an inch or so. Yeah the balanced pipe is a good look on foxes too, its one thing that hints that our cars may actually be fast to the unsuspecting.

Laredo just dealt with that with the 3" on his 85. I think 2.5"s look cooler.

          yeah i know, I'm a tosser!!!

I bought the 2.5 ss tiped duals and had a 3" y made into 2 2.5 mufflers and then the ss tails. It cost quite a bit more than I expected. I like it, but it must be heavy. Its not lacking for flow but was quieter than I really wanted!

well I'm definately not worried about the extra 12 pounds that one more tail pipe and muffler would weigh, I wont be class racing so theres no need for that, same reason I still keep the spare tire and jack in the hatch, and haven't stripped my interior.

Yea but the looks you get when they see 1 -3" pipe singing out the turbo song is priceless.

Well, the "Australian" caught me unaware as, when everyone on this site was welcoming you back a while ago, I thought it meant you were coming home not leaving.... Hang on to your Aussie speech inflections: the Geico lizard and the Outback Steakhouse advertising on TV/radio are examples that we listen to daily.

                          Does anyone make a 3" to 2.25" "Y"?

alternatively you could go dual 3"!!!!!! I think Pat has that on one of his cars.
