Well I have been wanting to change my exhaust to dual tail pipes, and as any enthusiast am always looking for ways to save money when the thought crossed my mind of using stock SS tailpipes from a mustang LX came to mind. I havent looked to hard for them, but it seems like if I found someone with a set in their garage collecting dust, I could get them pretty cheap. I thought of 2.5" and may still go that route but my car now, and a few others I've heard, have a single 3" pipe from turbo to tip, others have 2.5" tails, now if the 3" pipe gives adequate flow for these cars then I could split the 3" into 2.25" and not loose any flow. Has anyone done this with good results to back up my theory?
How I got there:
pieRsquared = the area of a circle so
3" dia) 3.14 x 1.5 squared = 7.065 square inches
dual 2.25" dia) 3.14 x 1.125 squared = 3.974 x 2 pipes = 7.94 square inches
Obviously with 2 pipes instead of 1 there would be a little more surface friction along the pipe walls but I think this would have little to no effect on the flow.
