  • First time doing exhaust, how does it look?

Okay, so yesterday I bought a bunch of 3" mandrel bends and 5' of straight pipe, all alumnized steel.

I think I have the system pretty much mocked up, other than the end of the tail pipe, but I'm putting my muffler at the end and it hasn't come in the mail yet.

Nothing is welded yet and I have some play with the exhaust still. I took some pictures, the best I could do laying on my garage floor. The suspension is almost completely loaded at this point so the rear end shouldn't come up much more.

Let me know what you think and if/where I can improve it, or any potential issues.

      +1 looks good.

you gotta make sure that bend over the axle and next to the upper control arm is _just_ right. it took me weeks of fiddling to get it so it wouldnt start banging on the subframe or the upper control arm.

and its quite easy to bang on the rubber isolators. if you wanna make really sure, pop the springs out and jack the left wheel through its entire motion.

What? I did mine. Looks good.

Go way up high over the axle. Stay a way from fuel lines, you don't want vapor lock.
Keep in mind how you can best disassemble it. I still need to add a flex pipe to mine.

Which muffler are you going with?
I did mine the same at home from turbo outlet to muffler, but havent done the tail pipe yet..
Still trying to decide which muffler to go with.

Looks good. That is tucked up better than mine I had done at a muffler shop.
Like Henson said keep in mind a easy way to disassemble it.

Definately add a flex pipe in there at the bottom of the downpipe.
What muffler you going with at the end? Supertrapp? Hopefully not a chrome coffee can fart pipe?

I have a flex pipe but I wanted to get the rest of the system built with straight pipes so I wasn't relying on the flex pipe to make a bend for me.

I was playing with it again last night and got it tucked up better, now it's running down where the drive-shaft tunnel meets the floor pans so it's tucked out of the way better.

I'm going to use 2 of the band clamps so the system is removable (not U-clamps). 1 will go between the downpipe and the midpipe and the other will go at the top of the over the axle piece, so it should be completely removable.

I'm going with a tail-pipe muffler because that's the best place in the system for the muffler, I have one coming in the mail that tucks up under the bumper nicely and is hardly noticeable.

Both of the 400whp Merkurs in town have this same muffler and sounds really good, it's hard to make a 4-cyl sound good, but this muffler does okay.

Hmm. You'll have to get some sound clips from it.
My svo has been mistaken for a V8 with the 3" MAC system I have... Until the turbo spools that is.
I haven't seen, but do you have a 3" downpipe and rlbow from the turbo? Those make a big difference in the performance, ans sound.

Why don't you get your busted arse up here and do better then, hmmm? j/k

I figured, hell the Holset has a 4" outlet, might as well make as much of the down-pipe 4" as well, lol. I go overkill not just because it makes more power, just because of the WOW factor, or "Shock Value" as my friend puts it.

My "Shock Value" friend is nuts, he has a Tempest that he's working on. Solid axle front end (gasser style) with a blown 440. Quick change rear end, yadda yadda. He has no intent on racing the car he just likes to build weird stuff.

                        But back to my exhaust.

Can you pull the shocks and springs and cycle the suspension up and down? You might also want to try it in roll.

Bob, I think I'm going to do that before I finalize anything. I'm also going to get hangers on it so it hangs right where it's supposed to be. I don't want to have any issues with it, I'd rather take my time and do it right. I'm nearly done, this is the time I really need to slow down, lol.

"this is the time I really need to slow down," That's one to live by. People tend to speed up at the end just to get it done, I think most mistakes are made at that point.
