  • CAT OR NO CAT, DIFFERENCE? short story.

    Greeting SVO enthusiasts.
Recently got my 84 1c slapper car on the road again.
When I got the state inspection the inspector told me that next year it will
not need to have the exhaust sniffed, that being said what kind of gain do you think I would get by removing the cat? I just installed a home built 3" turbo back exhaust, I will be going to the drag strip this friday evening for the first time with this car and I am very excited to see how it performs.
I dont post much, because I usually find the answers to my questions with the search fuction and when I purchased the car ,the p.o. gave me the factory service manuals. You guys and the service manuals deserve mucho credit, This car sat for eight years with a cracked head
List of mods to the car so far include,
K&n on the meter,m.b.c. gillis ,3" turbo back exhaust
    new timing belt,reman.cylinder head
plugs, wires, cap and rotor all motor craft
    new tires,
    brakes,
    new belts, hoses, radiator ,
    t-stat
removed rattling intercooler brackets, new firm hoses for intercooler and clamps,
a/c system recharged and blowing @ 40 degrees thank goodness.
Sorry for the long post, I just needed to tell you guys.
    Thanks,Jason.

it's not worth the effort to remove, if it's a decent cat, you won't see any performance difference.

remove the muffler befor going to the track , you will definatle feel the diff with out it, i drove mine a few miles with no muffler . just straight 3" to the back of the tranny , the turbo spooled really fast and had very little to none compressor bog between shift , hence the reason i gutted the 3" flowmaster . i still think i should of taken 1 more baffle out . i removed 3 baffles , left one V baffle and the conicle shaped baffle. the car preforms great and sounds wicked , really deep sounding . most people say its loud but i like the sound

that's one of the benefits of being a club member. in the newsletter area, we have a database that lists all SVO's and the # they came off the line, along with other information as well.

Man, I wished the A/C in out 86 worked. But then again, it's missing some paint.

Some systems can benefit from a little back pressure that a muffler or cat provides, but I don't know about the SVO, as ours still requires the cat. I do have an exhaust waiting for the day, though.
