  • Front Turn Signal Bulb replacement

    Hi all -

I'm a newbie here - just picked up an '86 Black SVO last week and trying my best to get it back into the best shape as possible.

The driver's side front outter turn signal lamp is out (inner is ok). How do I access the bulb? From the rear (engine bay)? I didn't see much room to work with - do I need to pull out the battery? Or does the lens pop out from the front? The lens appears loose, but I don't want to pull it out if it's not suppose to come out.

I take it that this blub being out is why my signal indicator on the dash doesn't work. (passenger side works fine)

    Any help is much appreciated!

There are studs with nuts on the backside to hold the whole light assembly in place. If it seems loose you better check that out. IIRC one easy way to reach the bulb is by reaching up from the bottom of the car.

Lay on your back and reach up between the front bumper cover and the inner fender shield. The socket will twist out if you just want to replace the bulb.

If you need to take the entire light out to repair that loose lense, then there are 3 nuts that you can access the same way as the bulb using a deep socket and ratchet.

Just be careful if you remove the assembly. With the age of the plastic it jusy may break the stud off the housing. Welcome!

Thanks for all the replies, tips and welcomes. I'll give it a try tonight as soon as I pick up a bulb. Manual says part # 1157 NA. Will hit up NAPA later.

As for the car, VIN # is 1FABP28T7GF242277 (can you tell what number it is?).

Pretty much a barn yard find. Dirt on top of dirt. But under it all is a bone stock 86 SVO. Bare bones - cloth interior, no sunroof, base radio (since been removed - has aftermarket unit but face plate is gone - so no tunes at the moement).

Car runs fine with good boost. Everything on the car works except for 1 turn signal and the drop down map light (which I already repaired). But gotta get that bulb done so I can get it inspected.

I"m real big into cars from the '80s and have a few others, but this is my first SVO - and am a little green. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions as I get her into tip-top shape. She still needs a lot more work.

Here are some pics after her first bath & wax...

Car looks good. Become a paid MEMBER of SVOCA and you can research your VIN and get any user entered background information in the registry. Your vehicle is in there a couple of times and it appears to be one of the later productions in MY '86.

Congrats on the find and good luck with it.

Nice looking 1C and definitely one of the later 86's based on your VIN. Mine was built in Jan 86 with a #196xxx, so yours was several units after mine.

Thanks for all the tips & comments.

Got the bulb replaced (real easy) & the car passed inspection. I was hopping the replacement of the turn signal bulb would have made my green dash board arrow indicator work, but no dice. I guess that bulb is out too & I gotta get behind the instrument panel.

Now on to a tune up (ordered kit from Forced4) and other things.

                      Thanks again.
