  • Interior/Dash Voltage Regulator

Around the start of Summer, I noticed the temp gauge on the grey car reading higher than normal. 180 thermostat, it didn't run higher last summer, so I pulled over and the radiator cap did not feel hotter than normal. Started the car back up, and Oil and Petrol looked a little higher than I considered normal.

I had a couple of bulbs dead in the dash; long story short we ended up switching the clear plastic piece with the copper traces for another, and a new Voltage Regulator was installed.

Now it looks like I lost about a quarter tank of petrol, Oil Pressure that used to be above the O barely crosses the Normal line, and temp is staying below the Normal line.

I'm not worried about the engine, just the change in the readings of the gauges. Possibly I missed a ground or such doing the plastic swap & regulator.

I'm not trying to be a smart alec but have you thought about some good gauges from auto meter??? I know a few guys in the club have taken the stock instrument panel and up fit them with some real nice aftermarket gauges. They look cool and fit the stock panel nicely with a little modification. Do a search and there are some photosd of them. If you are stuck on the oe gauges I would definitely do a voltage drop test on the grounds. Also are you sure those parts came from a like vehicle (SVO)?

IIRC there is a thread on FEP about someone making a an adjustable solid state one. That way you can make sure its putting out the correct voltage to the gauges.

Work had me driving 9 hour tos Mississippi on Labor day, I wanted to take the grey car.

With a full tank of fuel, the gauge showed a little under half. We put the original trace piece & regulator back, gauges looked "more normal". Replaced the regulator with the one that came off the broken dash pod from the totaled 1D. Gauges look as I remember them from last year, and haven't caused me to think they are wrong.

I think something was wrong with the new regulator, I'll check the part number & possibly test when I get home.

The IVR is a real piece of work that has, over the years provided nothing but countless headaches, wasted hours & wasted money. I’ve grabbed as many IVR’s as I can find at the local wrecking yards and whenever I take issue with a gauge reading, swap out the IVR. There is a guy on EvilBay (jpinkypink) selling new, adjustable digital voltage regulators for a little over 20 bucks and he will put the proper leads on them before he ships them.

I bought one a while back but I’m still a few days away from applying power to my resto so haven’t been able to put it to the test. Its gotta be better than the piece of crap I’ve been fighting
