  • How many variations of Oxford White are there?

My car was repainted before I bought it and I wanted to spray some areas with touch up paint. The Duplicolor Oxford White is too gray and off white compared to what's on the car. And then I notice that Ford has at least two different shades under that name along with paint codes. 9L is the off white grayish color but Z1 Oxford white is much brighter version apparently. Are there any other tints of it?

I tried to match it to Perfomance white but it's too yellowish and creamy while the color on the car is more of a pure white. And I'm sure whoever painted it probably sourced their paint without using the 9L paint code and instead asked for Oxford white and had the Z1 version mixed instead.

Could it be that the PO said 'paint it white', or, more probably, said 'paint it Oxford White' and the painter ordered 'white'? I'm not doubting that there's more than one 'Oxford White', as I have a late-model GM that's 'black', but there's like 3 'blacks' for that model year, two for the particular model alone.

I do not know how many variants there are listed for the 9L Oxford White, but even on my original paint car, I doubt a "fresh" mix would match to my "aged" paint. Best thing to do is take the fuel door off and carry it to your local ppg dealer and have some paint mixed to match and put in a spray can for you.

The car was repainted in the newer ZR paint code. Why they did it instead of the 9L is anyone's guess.

Probably because the PO said 'Oxford White' and when the painter went to the paint shop, he failed to tell the guy behind the counter '1986 Ford Mustang Oxford White, paint code 9L'. And the guy behind the counter either didn't know, or didn't ask 'what paint code?'

IIRC, the white on our 1971 F150 was also Oxford White.

yeah, 9L is always the same color. if you just asked for 'oxford white' at the paint counter, didn't specify FORD, or 86 9L, who knows what you'd get.

ZR is ultra white and it's actually a nice hue with a hint of blue in it. Oxford white is an off white with a grey tone to it.

This is it right here. What happened is I accidentally tapped the wall in the garage parking it one day messing up the paint on the cover.
