  • How do I remove the side spats?

I was needing to remove my side spats on my 86 to try and see if I can repair a crack in mine. I found screws in the wheel well and along the rocker panel. But what is holding it along the body? Where and how do I go about removing these fasteners; if any?

They're attached inside the car ...

You'll have to remove the 1/4 trim pieces in the car .. in order to get to the bolts holding them on.

Do I have to remove the inside panels that run from the drivers seat to the rear of the hatch to get to them?

Those are the panels and I think you have to remove the back seat to get them totally out because the panels have a hole where the seats hinge(if memory serves me correct)

careful not to break the studs off the sailpanel

        hope that helps

I just pulled mine off a couple weeks ago... the easiest way I've found is to remove the bottom portion of the rear seat, remove the lower part of the inner interior panels (they come out seperate from the large pieces) and take three screws out of the large panels (the three along where the seatbelts are). You can pull the large panel back far enough, and slide your hand behind the inner plastic peice where the sound deadner is stapled to, and get a 9mm gearwrench (or equivalent) to take them off with. The nuts are standard and take an 11/32's socket, but I couldn't get this one on the nut as there was some sort of silicone around the nuts and the 11/32 socket wouldn't fit.

There will be two nuts on the inside that you'll need to remove, and one screw hidden behind the lower rocker piece to totally remove the spat from the car. I'll go ahead and say this method isn't particularly "hand friendly" for lack of a better expression, but it sure beats pulling the whole rear quarter pieces out of the car.

          HTH,

          Shannon

THanks to you and all that replied. I was hoping there would be a way to get to them without removing the inner panels. That would be a pain and time consuming. Thanks again.
