  • Door speakers?

I know a lot of the older Fords had 5-1/4" speaker holes in the doors and a rectangular punch out for a grill in the door panels. I'm too lazy to pull the door panel and look so can anyone tell me if the SVOs are set up that way from the factory?

    NOPE --

but If you have a set of door panels without holes -- and REALLY want those extra speakers -- I have a set of door panels I will trade you that already have holes in them.

Do you mean the doors aren't factory stamped for door speakers???

      What exactly are you proposing?

        Speaker Hole in Door

It has been 13 years since I had the door panels off of my SVO and I seem to remember there was a hole stamped somewhere in the sheet metal of the inside door for something like a 5 1/4' speaker. These areas did not really line up with any good places in the door panel to put a hole and mount a door speaker as I recall.

I am picking up some 84 Mustang doors tomorrow and I'll take a closer look.

What I was saying is -- don't butcher a set of good SVO Door panels to add speakers.

I have a set that have already been butchered -- if you want them, I'd love to trade, and get a set that are not butchered.

there are 2 different places you can cut them for speakers. One is down low at the back of the door (near where the latch is), the other is towards the front of the door(near the hinges), roughly 6 inches from the bottom of the door.

I have had door panels off recently -- and I don't remember any perferations in them for cut-outs.

            Just checked!

I just checked my NOS ( in factory primer ) SVO drivers door and a used 84 SVO door that I'm selling today. Neither have speaker locating points. The 84 door was already cut by the previous owner in the lower front but I could not find any other markings / dimples. I did check my 90 LX Frankenstein car which I still haven't reinstalled the door panels and it has the factory speakers in the same area. The door shell is pretty much the same and would probably accept all the SVO guts and door panels. There may be some trim mounting point issues on a 90 model versus the SVO for the top door trim / window wiper seal but you would also gain power mirrors and factory speakers mounts... Just a thought.

Yes, DON'T BUTCHER THE FACTORY DOOR PANELS!

There are LOTS of door panels out there with holes cut in them already. Post a wanted ad, I am certain you will find someone who will trade. If you are installing 5-1/4" speakers, I believe you will have to sawsall some of the inner door skin, too.

Why not pull the dash pad and replace the speakers that are in the dash with something more up to date?

              Just a thought.

I guess the dash speakers make a lot more sense since the doors are not speaker-ready. Anybody have any opinions on good replacement dash speakers. I would need something pretty efficient since I'm only pushing 11W per channel.

Call Crutchfield and ask for "Sonny". Tell them that glennard sent you.

                    Replacement Dash Speakers

Crutchfield sells the 3 1/2" Polk EX351a speaker as a bolt-in replacement for the dash speakers in the 84-86 Mustang SVO. They are sold as a pair for $39.99 + shipping. The magnets are huge for such a small speaker and they are very efficient. MUCH improved sound over the stockers! Here's the link:
