  • Curious as to what to do about rust

Car has a slit crack in the sheet metal of the roof about 1/2" then is solid from there. It is located along the back edge (the top seem of the opening for the hatch(where it meets the roof))

Just want other peoples would do.

Mikey Ray re-roofed his car .. it had golfball sized rust holes in it.

Cut out rust, get patch from a donor car, then grind and weld in patch, use a self etch primer, then paint. Also be sure to spray / cold galvanize the underside after you're finished with the top side. The galvanizing is available from Eastwood in a spray can. This description of the repair process is somewhat simplistic but is basically the best thing to do to stop rust permanently.

Sage advice, Ken! The only way to deal with rust is to get rid of it and make sure it doesn't come back!

Wonder what to do for a short term solution though. (College student and not a lot of time to work on the car and hate to pay out the butt to have the roof fixed right now and not be able to drive the car )

But in the long run that is what I would like to do is to weld in a patch panel for it.

Just need a way to keep it from leaking or getting a lot worse in the next couple of years.

The short term solution is the SAME as the long term solution. Spend the money it takes to fix it right so it doesn't come back to haunt you in a few years.

true, any idea on how much it will run to have it cut out and a new patch piece welded in? It is right on the seam?

This means I probably got a little screwed on what I payed for it eh at 2500...

I have a question here. I just bought a 86 SVO and it has rot on the roof too and i was gonna cut a piece out of another doner car. My question is is it just me or why is every SVO I look at has rot on the roof? I own plenty of fox body Mustangs and am always around them and I have never ever seen them rust on the roof. There are all the same cars both Mustangs and SVO's just wondering why SVO's I see the rust on the roof or am I just lucky?

                  SVO Roofs Rust Prone?

I don't know what to say about that. I have seen SVO's with rust in the roof and I've also seen other Mustangs of that vintage with rust in the roof. My 84 GT Turbo Hatchback had rust in the roof in the same place Sean's car has it. Perhaps when a regular hatchback Mustang of the 84-86 vbintage rusts out in the roof it just gets thrown away. SVO's on the other hand, stick around and get driven a bit longer.
