  • What are rear spoilers made of?

My rear spoilers are cracking around the mounting screws. I have a plastic welding kit that I plan to use to repair the cracks, but does anyone know what type of plastic material the spoilers are made from?

Has anyone else found another good way to fix those cracks?

    Thanks

If you have your spoiler off, look for some letters. I'd say the bottom is probably ABS, but can't say for sure. I don't ever remember seeing anything on mine, but I wasn't really looking. Let me know what you see, and I'll tell you what kind of plastic it is, and what type of adhesive would work best.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

I beileve Ford advertised the spoilers to be made of polycarbinate. This was the first time Ford used the material. My guess, that would be the bottom one. Not sure about the upper one.

Some painting manuals will list some tests to determind what type of materials it might be by doing a burn test. You scrape off a small piece that will not be noticed and try to light it. Black sooty burn means one type and no burn is something else. This is done so you will know what type of paint to use. I would check some old painting manuals or books on interior painting (automotive).

These days they don't seem to worry much about painting plastics.

84-86 might have been to early for plastic codes molded in the part.

Having brought up the rear spoiler paint issue to a very talented painter in my area (a previous owner of 4 SVO's, including the Hot Rod Magazine Editor's car that Fellenlong saved from further butchering), the painter mentioned to me that the SEM bumper trim paint was the proper thing to use.

I found no lettering on the underside of 2 spoilers that I just looked at. It sure appears to be ABS to me.

Ford advertised it to be polycarbonate. I know that with respect to cyanoacrlyic adhesives (superglue, use the gel not the liquid formula), it behaves as polycarbonate does (they work well). Other adhesives that work well are epoxys (good results have been obtained using JB weld for repairs).

My experience with paints on the wings is that most any quality automotive paint will perform well. The wings are a hard plastic, unlike softer urethanes, and panits adhere well to it. The SEM products are quality products designed for the professional and I highly recommend them.

              Pat,

Does your painting buddy have a paint code from say, Ditzler or another company?

check the FAQ section about trim color (the wings are the same color)

there is a ppg paint code there, that should be easily converted to any other type of paint.

I know this is an old post but regards to the material flame test here is the information:

I came across this while trying to find information on painting with flex agent.

E&G Classics does not repair the wings....Lee Clary who works there does it in his free time. The process is not cheap as it is labor intensive but when done you do not need wing supports and they are better than original in strength. Please do not call E&G asking about wing repair or you just might get him in trouble and his service may just disappear.

I know the plastic is fairly hard and I needed to fix the mounting studs on the upper wing. I took it in to work and we used two part epoxy that they use to glue semi truck hood pieces together when they get messed up in wrecks.
I dont remember what the name or brand is but I can check if you want.

Out of curiosity, what does Lee charge for this service?

That all depends on how bad the wing is and what kind of repair work it needs. If it needs the feet replaced that go under the leading edge of the lower wing then the price goes up. Generally though I believe his prices start around $150 and go up plus shipping.

I am kind at this point with our 86. I need to repair the upper wing so the studs are re-mounted. We were going to use all-metal, but if someone has done this in the past, has a method and materials that work, I'd love to use those services. Any idea how to get a hold of Mr. Clary?
