  • A/F guage

Is anyone using an A/F guage? A pyrometer? Anyone found one that works good?

The hot rod shops may rake you over the coals for a pyrometer. The digital displays will be hard to read if the numbers change too fast. Diesel truck shops have the analog version and the thermocouples. The standard ones dont have enough sweep to display up to that critical 1550 degree temperature, but they can order one for you that goes up to 2000 degrees. If this is not a permanent installation you can get an adapter for a Fluke multimeter that will display the temps (not sure of the temp range that's available). Dig up an Omega catalog and see what they have available.

As far as the A/F gauge goes there are cheap LED types out there but you get what you pay for (they're just neat toys). The wideband A/F setup will cost a few hundred dollars. Some dyno shops can include the wideband as a temporary installation while they do dyno pulls on your car (then you don't have to buy one).

I'll see if I have any thermocouples laying around the shop if you like. You would still need a welded in 3/8" pipe bung in the exhaust to mount it. A temporary install could be fitted through the EGR port on the exhaust manifold.

Thanks Pat. Just looking for something that is useful - I don't need any extra toys that light up. I want to be able to monitor A/F when I tune and swap different parts. I'm looking for something I can stick in a A-pillar pod with a boost gauge.

Not to change the subject to much but, what A-Piller Pod works the best for a SVO?

        93' 2.3L LX I walk faster
        04' Z71 Tahoe 16.7 @ 82mph

I never knew a four banger could be this much fun, and I may never go back to: N/A, Autos, or V-8s again

I'm looking at gauges now, including A/F meter, from autometer. Not very familiar w/other brands. They're a little pricey, but at least I know that I'm getting decent gauges.

ProHawk, Motion Dynamics had a dual 2 1/16" A-pillar pod for 79-86 in their old site's garage sale section. (not the current website). They would probably know what works.
