  • Electrical gremlins...

Has anyone else had their fuel gauge stop working after upgrading (84 and early 85) fuel pumps? I noticed that mine had stopped registering so I decided to investigate. I checked all of the wires in the sending and pump harness; all fine. The only other wiring that was modified by me was replacing the resistor wire with regular wire. Yesterday I noticed that when I pierce the yellow (sending unit power supply) wire with a test light the gauge works fine. It appears that I need some type of resistor for the ground, as grounding the yellow wire direct just causes the gauge to peg. The test light appears to act like a resistor of some type (bulb flashes on and off) as the gauge functions fine with it grounded.

    Fuel gauge

I can't help you with the fuel gauge problem but when I installed the walbro pump in my '84 I replaced the resistive wire and all was fine. Gauge still works. Sorry I can't help.
