  • fair price for rear quarter?

I found a guy locally parting out an 86 GT and he'll sell me the rear quarter for $50. Does that sound like a fair price? It sounded ok to me.

He said to bring the SVO over and he'd help me figure out how much was damaged so we'd know what to cut off of his car. Any tips on making sure I get everything I need? Here's a picture of the damage I need to repair.

    OUCH!! That hurt!

$50 seems like a fair price for enough off the 86 Mustang to fix that!

When you take your chunk out of the donor car, be generous to yourself! You can always trim down what you don't need. It looks to me like you are going to need at a minimum the entrie quarter panel.

It is easiest and neatest to cut off your old damasged section at the quarter panel spot welds and then remove the entire quarter panel for replacement from the donor. Cut out your donor patch panel on the outside of all the spot welds, so you can later break or cut the welds and size it to fit wher the old panel was.

So would that be from the back of the door to the taillights, and up to the roofline? It's hard to tell where the spotwelds would be as you go up. There is a bit of a ripple to the area behind the sail panel (between the sail and the hatch). The hatch also leaks and has a weird flex to the trim at the center top of the window. Maybe I should get his hatch as well if it's in good shape! From the pic I saw, it looks like his car was hit in the front.

My car came with the damage, I'm just cleaning up the mess. Doing my part to keep one more ragged out SVO from going to the junkyard!

Cut about one foot forward of the door opening then in through the floorpan, turn right and cut through the shock absorber hole and back through the center hole / opening for the tailight. Then cut through the roof starting at the hatch hinge hole forward and then turn left to match the cut that you started one foot in through the rocker panel / door opening. Does that make sense?

50 bucks is a great price. And the advice is correct about how much to cut. It is always easier and less frustrating to have more material than needed than to have less and really need it.

I tried to post that about 4 times, but when I read it, it made no sense --

From the sounds of it you should have it all. Just to clarify, make sure you get the wheel well too.

I just had the same quater replaced on my 84. I cut it off and the local u-pull-it charged me $60, so $50 is a good deal.

I 3rd & 4th what others have said, get as much mat'l as you can. I cut long the roofline over the quater glass, took the whole door jamb, all along the floorpan & trunk, & into the tail light panel.

1 Sawzall & 2 good blades should be about all you'll need. I was using a battery powered one when I got mine and went through 1 complete battery pack (18V Dewalt).

Congrats on repairing her, the average person (non-car enthusiast) would just sell the car and buy another one.

My hubby thought I was nuts when I brought it home - it has body damage, dings everywhere, idles weird, bad cat/muffler which makes horrible noises, needs new tires, and pulls hard to the left - but I still love it.

It sounds like I'll be meeting with the guy next week to tear up his car. I'll let y'all know what I bring home.

                        Got it!

Took a while for him to hack it apart, but I finally got my quarter. He cut it all the way back to include the rear framerail. Even left one of the control arms dangling. I think it should be plenty for the bodyman to work with.
