  • Hood Weight?

wow, this hood is heavy. it must weigh 400lbs...
i wonder if i could swap to front mount intercooler and get a new hood? yes, this sounds very wrong but it weighs soo much more than my cobra hood does and weight is bad.

just thinking, please do not flame because i probably won't do this unless i find a similar hood that weighs a lot less.

      SVO Hood

It may feel like 400lbs but actually weighs in at 48lbs. Try the HO Fibertrends hood. I put one on my track car and it is a very nice part. The fit is nice, the underside is finished and looks like the original hood. About the only difference is that the fiberglass hood's edges are flat instead of rounded.

Dave at HO Fibertrends told me ~28lbs. on the hood but I have not been able to weigh it or either of the hatches yet. He said the hatch saves ~30 lbs.
I live in CA but drove the car to IA for some open track events this past summer and to get the hood and hatch installed. Hopefully the car will be painted and ready to go for an event at Mid America Motorsports Park in two weeks.

The car was sure a looker on the trip east. I couldn't find a buyer for the original hood near IA and I didn't want to leave it there indefinitly. So I bought a Mustang hood during a Pick N Pull half price day, jig sawed a hole for the intercooler and made a hood scoop from a 9" x 12" cake pan from KMart.
It looked like one of the Beverly Hillbillies owned this car. Picture this, a Jalapeno red SVO with faded, oxidized, dark blue flat hood, cut up cake pan scoop, primered quarter panel, no wings, spats or moldings, and no interior.
Pretty amazing picture huh? The best part is that I ran the car at a BMW club event at Heartland Park with this look.

            Heh, Priceless! :-)

So, how are the fit and finish of the hood and hatch? I have been thinking of getting such parts in order to save the original ones off our 86 (and to save a little weight).

            Thanks.

The hood fit and finish is very good both on the top and bottom. It even has the indentation for the Ford emblem on the nose. The scoop trim fits as it does on the original hood.
The hood is not as stiff as the steel one so it does flex a bit at speed. The hatch is very light and HO Fibertrends said not to use the hatch struts because it would crack the hatch.

The body shop had some difficulty with the hatch not lining up at the roof line. The center of the hatch was low and each side about 1/8" to 1/4" too high. Also, if the right side of the hatch was fit to the edge of the right quarter panel then the left side had a 1/4" to 3/8" gap at the left quarter panel.
The source of the problems most likely are the result of the car being hit in the driver's quarter more than once in it's life and not a bad hatch. The body shop found an area of bondo in the roof near the top of the hatch and noticed that the hinges were tweeked as well.
I bought the car with a salvage title due to damage to the driver's quarter between the tire and rear bumper cover. A used quarter was hung to repair the damage but the hatch opening wasn't worked on since it was going to be a track car anyway.
