Seat Piping

Why is it that some SVO's with the fabric interior have a charcoal-gray piping on the seats, and some do not? Was the piping done during a certain year? My SVO has double-stitching around the edges, instead of piping, and it is original.

Early 85 had piping as well.

Very early '85, as mine is Dovestitch. I am sure someone knows the cutoff point.
