  • '84 Engine Harness

Well, as '84 engine harnesses go, this one is good by comparison of others I've seen. However, I do have a couple issues to fix. Here is the first one. I'm thinking I should just clean the contact, re-insert, and then heat shrink over the junction. What I would like to know is what is this junction for....it looks like a plug to me, but it doesn't want to come apart. Oh, this is part of the alternator wiring.

Does anyone have a good picture of their connection? Pat - any thoughts here?

If it is a plug be careful. I actually busted up the pins on a plug that was rusted together. I didn't notice it until I plugged it back together and it didn't work.

    Real PITA.

Those heavy-guage orange and yellow wires run from the alt. to the rear defrost on the HVAC control panel. I know, because I need to repair it on the 'Trash car too, and just pulled that part of the harness out of the turbo GT I had here. Hope that helps.

          I think I need a beer.

That sure looks like the alternator loom plug. Don't waste much time trying to save that one. I wouldn't trust the connections. The field and stator are the two small wires. The larger black wire should have a red stripe on it. It goes to the battery positive side of the starter relay(via a circuitous route towards the firewall first). Your choice of alternator (stock, or 3G, or???) to be used needs to be made before suggesting the best rewiring components. Is this going on the blue car?

Well, looking at THIS harness, it's in A LOT nicer shape then the one currently on the car. I'm going to have to compare it though to another harness I have outta a '84. Right now though, I'm thinking THIS harness will replace the one currently in the car. I'll probably just keep the other harness (nose to tail '84 SVO) as a spare.

Whichever route I go though, I'll ditch the stock alternator for a 3G.

When I put in the 3g alt. it cured alot of drive-ability issues I had because of low voltage due to amperage load.

Its a plug, on my 84 it got fubar so i cut out the plug and spliced the wires together thus eliminating it.

I've heard that one before. I think I'll need to try it on one of my cars too.

Just follow that crusty 10 gauge black wire with red stripes back through it's loom routing. Remove it and repair any collateral damage that it has caused on the adjacent wires. Determine what amp alternator you plan to run, battery location, and whether or not you will be using (1) an original starter with solenoid, or (2) a reduction drive with the solenoid as part of the starter. Then contact PLA world domination headquarters for the proper fused cable sponsorship opportunity.
