I'd like to recommend the DCCONTROL fan controller. This is an awesome product. I have it running the Taurus heavy duty fan with the high amp motor. It costs around $100 (about the same as a stock fan control unit) but will do much more and will handle tons of amps. When the car starts to warm up it starts the fan slowly. As the car heats it increases the voltage to the fan. If you turn on the AC it goes straight to high speed. Even though it's wired to the battery directly, it's also wired to sense when the car is on or off so that when you shut the engine off the fan stops. Or you have the choice of letting the fan continue to cool after the car is shut down. The installation was literally only four wires (all wiring is included in the kit) and a jumper setting for the temperature. There are multiple temperature settings, all determined by jumper settings. So for 194 degrees (about right for a 190* thermostat) it's just a single jumper setting. There is no guessing about where it's set when you are turning a rheostat like other after market controllers. The installation took less than 30 minutes and most of that was me looking for a small drill bit so I could make three small holes in the inner fender to bolt this thing down (I already had one hole).
I used to run the fan controller that SVPU sells made by Flexalite. It was a nice unit but the Taurus fan pulled too much current on high speed mode for the Flexalite unit. I also never knew what temperature the fan was set to come on. It was all guesswork while turning the dial.
You will have to email them if you want more info. link is off of the site: http://www.dccontrol.com/ The website used to be browse-able but he removed the links some time ago.
A illustration of the unit is at the bottom of this page: http://www.dccontrol.com/componentsR1.htm. If you're creative you can still find things on the site. he even sells complete fan solutions; www.dccontrol.com/fans.htm. They are "drop-in-and-hookup" fans with a couple of wires to connect.
