  • Wheel balance.

As far as wheel balancing is concerned what do you guy's prefer.

    Static.
    Dynamic

    Tape on.
    Pound on.

I did a static balance today with the weight only on the inside of the rim (pound on) for my bud with the other 86 Saleen.

Personally I dont like doing this but it seem's that alot of people prefer it over using stick on weight on the inside and pound on weight's on the outside.

Definately has to be a dynamic. Nobody statically balances anymore really. Dynamic much more accurate.

If it was my ride and i had some nice wheels and had access to a decent accurate balancer i'd go with stickies on the inside. Thats what I got on my Cobra Rs. But for Steelies or stockers maybe, then some hammer ons is ok i guess... just use the correct ones and not mess up your wheels.

      wheel balance

I wouldnt use tape on weights unless they were the last option. But thats just my opinion. I prefer hammer on wieghts on both sides. I trust them a lot further. When I worked in a tire shop we used coated weights so they would not mar the aluminum wheels.

We have the same weights at work that wont scratch the wheel.

I prefer the pound on wieghts on both side's. To me it alway's seem's that the balance is better.

I've never found a stick on that stays put for very long. They also usually fly off at around 100 which is no fun. I know hammer ons fly off also but less often for me at least.

My 05 GT had the "hammer on" weights from the factory. While the 05 T-Bird on their showroom had tape-weights. What a shame to put those ugly weights on such a nice wheel.
The very first thing I did on my 05 was a trip to a trusted, good tire shop and had those weights replaced with tape-ons.
I have never heard of an inner tape-on coming off.

They came off all four of my wheels... this was from Discount Tires. Maybe just crappy / cheapo stuff?

Make sure you guys are talkin about the same thing --
tape ons will NEVER stay on if they are stuck on the face of the wheel.

so what you do on SVO wheels, is put the stick ons on the inside of the wheel, where the sticky side is against the round part of the rim, as close as you can get them to the backside of the face.

Someone mentioned the proper size of weights for the rim. I still have a plastic gauge from when I worked at Wheel Worx. IIRC it has ~ 6-8 different profiles for the various shape edges on wheels on it...

I static balace everything and have never noticed any problem. Of course I dont take any of my cars over 100mph very much. I hate seeing weights on the outside of the wheel. To me its an appearance issue. Even with the coated weights, if you drive something in the winter here they catch salt and dirt and start to corrode the wheel behind the weights.

i like and used stick on weights for years. I think it up to the installer and owner of the wheels to make sure the wheels are clean so the weights stay on. Hammer on weights coated or uncoated will scar the face of any rim reason being water/moister and dirt get behind the weight and create a stain.

Dynamic is the only way to go. Ask Mikey Ray static balancing. On my own wheels i have tried lots of ways to balance and the best way is to have weights on the most inner and the most outer part of the rims.

I've done SVOCA On Track "drove to Bama & back to NJ" driven to the Mustang 40th in Tenn and so far so good.

SVO4PWR2, thats what you meant? Hmm, I was just talkin about hidin all the weights on the inside of the wheel so they dont really show at all.

The weights I mentioned were the peel and stick on the inside of the rim. It was small lead squares imbedded in an adhesive. You broke off how ever many were needed and stuck them on.

you could put all the weight on the inside but thats not going to give the "best" balance.

the weights on my rims are 1/4 oz stick on squares by 3M, they come in 3 oz strips.

with the SVO type of wheels, you have to put them on the inside of the wheel, just like the pic Rich showed

You could put them behind the face of the wheel, but balance isn't going to be perfect, but better than none. Keep the weights as close to the face of the wheel as possible.
