  • 94 Cobra Wheels...

Now before you all tell me to search, I can tell you that I did that, but could not get a straight answer to this question.. Everything that I have read refers to people having the newer (sn95-up) suspension installed.. I've got a line on a set of 94 Cobra wheels for $170/set.. I'm going to use these mainly for track/auto-cross stuff, very little road useage..

I've been reading that the 94-95 LCA's & spindles are different than the 96-up stuff (which is very close to the original SVO parts).. If this is true, will I have an issue using the 94 cobra wheels on my stock SVO suspension?? If I use the correct tire size, I should not have any rubbing issues?? Right??

I'll get some measurements when I pick them up..

    Thanks Dave

...but won't they stick out in the front with stock SVO stuff???? That's what I've gathered in my researching the same subject.

Here are a couple pics of mine. I have all stock original suspension. The fronts never rub or hit anything, but the driver's side rear rubs the lip on really hard bumps or when there are more than two people in the car.

Thanks Guys!! In all the reasearch that I did, I could not find out if anybody has used the 94-95 style wheels instead of the 96-98 cobra wheels.. Everything that I found showed using the later wheels nothing mentioned about the 94-95's.. IIRC the off-set is just a bit different..

          Thanks again!!

Dave, I had a set for my race tires and they did fine. You should not have any problems at all.

I have a set of 1996 Cobra wheels on my 1986 SVO right now. They are a little snug to the front fender lips, but if it becomes an issue, I'll get out the baseball bat and make some clearance.

I measured the stock SVO and 1996 Cobra wheels a few weeks ago. The backspacings are the same, but the SVO wheels are 7" wide while the Cobra wheels are 8" wide. That means that the outside face of the wheels will be 1" further outboard with the SN95 wheels, but they are still just inside the flare lip.

Now, I tried to bolt up a set of 1999 Cobra wheels, and they won't seat. The stock bearing housing in the SVO rotor is a little too fat, and the ID of the hole in the center of the 1999 wheel tapers, so the bearing housing bottoms out inside the wheel before the wheel bottoms on the mounting face on the rotor. But, I think a 1/2" thick spacer will fix this problem.

I went & p/u the cobra wheels on Saturday.. When I arrive I notice that they are NOT 94-95 wheels, but the 96-98 cobra wheels.. Cool I told my Dad as we walked up.. After some B/S with the guy for a bit I got a little story to go woth the wheels.. They where on a cobra that was totalled up at RA a while back.. The car caught fire & burned up.. So one of the wheels has a bit of yellowing on the polished outside.. I'll be taking that one to work later & fixing it..

They have tires on them that were used on the track!! They are very cupped on the outsides.. The size on them are 255/40-17 Toyo Proxes T1-S.. I just wanted to see how they measured up to the stock wheel/tire combo..

                1) End to end they are fairly close to the originals..

2)The hight is just a bit taller bit with is good..

3)~ back spacing was measured at 6".. But this was at the tire not the wheel..

                4)Tire & size..

5)SVO wheel back spacing from tire not the wheel.. ~6 1/2"

                  7)Tread with on the HRi's 7 3/4" (tire size at 225)

                  8)Tread on the Toyo's 8 1/2" (tire size at 255)

9)Part #'s on the wheels indicatint that they are the 96-98 style Cobra wheels..

I know that these were taken at night, but these wheels look GREAT on my car.. I can't wait until I can get some Pic's durring the day!!

                    1) They don't seem to stick out very far.. I'm loking them alot so far..

                    2) Even with the FRPP "C's" all the way around, they don't rub until I get right at full lock.. Not bad for 255's?? Now I think that I might have to start thinking about detailing my front brakes!!

                    3) One more.. I'm thinking "New avitar!!"

                    4) Liking the look!!

                      5) The look from the rear makes the tires look wide.. I do think that I could get some 275"s on the rear of the side walls were correct.. Then I would not be able to rotate the tires..

                      6) Last one!!

I've been doing some reasearch & I'm thinking about not having full-on track tires installed.. I'm going to have some Fusion ZRi's installed.. I'm thinking about going with something in the 235/40-17's.. http://thefuzionzone.com/zri.asp

My brother-in-law can get me a really good deal on them..

Thats awesome Dave as I want to put 96/97 Cobra wheels on my turd once the funds become available. Don't you have B springs on your car too?

The backspacing on those wheels is 5.72". You don't measure backspacing at the tire sidewall bulge.

A 275 tire is too wide to properly fit on a 17x8 wheel. It will mount up, but the sidewall looks a bit goofy and the contact patch isn't right.

Stock tire size for those wheels is 245/45-17. I wouldn't go any narrower.

Ryan, I have "C" springs on it.. It sits a bit lower than I like, but handles like on rails!!

Ted, your car looks very sweet with these wheels when I saw it at the '06 reunion.. I was not sure that I would like the polished look until I mounted the tries.. I was thinking of having them powder-coated in a dark gray with black inserts, to match the car.. But I like the polished look so I think that I will keep them with this finish for a while..

Mark, I was trying to get a total back/spacing to see if those tires would rub against the strut.. I know that the wheels would fit, just wondering about tire clearance.. My brother-in-law is taking care of the tire size for me.. When I talked to him yesterday, he mentioned that a 245/40-17 would be the best tire for the wheel/car combo.. I have seen a few of the "tires too wide for the wheels" lately.. They don't look very safe with the way the sidewall tapered in towards the wheel.. The 275's were just a thought to see that bigger rear tire.. Thanks for the info..
