  • 19K Mile 86 SVO on Bring a Trailer

Anyone know more about this car that's on BAT right now? The VIN is FABP28T8GF194577

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-ford-mustang-11/

Seller claims it's a 19K mile car but it looks more like a 119K mile car with maybe some newer bits on it. Hard to tell. Carfax reported mileage starts in 1998 with 2249 miles. Also looks like a lot of change of owners so figure someone on here may know the car.
Hoping to get on the track soon

There are several red-flags on that car from just seeing the pictures. IF it really has 19k miles, those were some rough miles. It's not a car I would buy. I don't like that color and it needs several things to be a good purchase. $10k seems to be about right for that car.

Don't like the color! Come on man...the best race cars are always red! LOL.

I don't think the picture of the keys helps the seller's case.

I like red, just not the jalapeno red. I am "canyon" svo after all.

I agree those flags raise eyebrows, but I disagree with the comment in the auction that claims its 119k miles because the flaws they point out can all be attributed to age not miles. For example UV faded paint/trim/interior pieces can all be legit if it spent some time outdoors including the wheel delamination. The stone chips on front can also be ok if it was mostly highways miles in urban area (tailgating). I bought a jalapeno red 85 Fox one time from the original owner with 50k miles and the car looked like it had 150k miles because it sat outside in a carport for years not being used. I'm not saying that it has 19k or 119k because its impossible to be 100% conclusive from photos and I would have to see the car in-person to make that ruling, so its not wise to jump to conclusions without seeing all the evidence first hand.

Just an FYI. The seller sells cars on ebay too and has less than stellar reviews.

19k or 119k, at the current bid, looks like a nice opportunity for someone.

Just seems odd that someone would go to all the trouble to list a car and not spend a few $$$ and labor to clean and detail her up a bit to maximize the return.

Why were all of the original radiator and coolant hose clamps changed?

I have owned four '86 models over the years (early and late production) and have never seen the small round trunk key, all of mine were the larger oval. Are these keys correct?

Interesting that the oil pan is relatively clean vs. the surrounding suspension and transmission.

We have already noted the replaced Koni's, springs, sway bar bushings, down pipe, missing coil cover, worn door weatherstrip, incorrect plug wires, incorrect battery cables, etc., etc.

Typically, the gauges are a tell-tale sign of UV sun exposure. From the pics provided they look pretty good, I have seen a lot worse on higher mileage cars.

Now THAT is valuable info. The auction states "Private Seller" but that can deceiving especially if the seller is a small time dealer/flipper pretending to be a private party, lots of that going on these days.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am assuming that you are listed as "private seller" if you own the car vs. a dealer representing the actual owner.

If you click on the sellers name you can view their BAT history; comment, bid, win, and sell. Very common on BAT (or other auctions for that matter) to have dealers buying and selling cars. Appears to be a fun way to collect/enjoy cars and make a few $$$.

After using eBay since 1998 and I've had my run-ins with the eBay Motor staff so here is policy that I believe is still in place... When you list a car on eBay you can "choose" whether you are Dealer, Private Seller, or Not Specified via the check-box. Nobody oversees that, its entirely up to the individual listing the car. Also, if you list more than 5 or 6 cars in a 12 month period then eBay "brands" you for life as a dealer, so you loose all your private seller perks, even if you are a private seller, and your listing will still display as a private seller.

I'll just say this... There is a lot of fraud, greed, and deception in the industry.

Good points posted here. Has the VIN ever been registered here? Someone with a 19K SVO might have been a member at some point.

Took me a while, but I finally recognized that SVO! It was a former member's car, Earl D. First time I saw that car was back at the 2002 SVOCA Reunion in Alabama. At the time the car had only 10K or so on the clock and he took it out on the track day on the Talladega Grand Prix road course to have some fun with it. We were all a bit concerned seeing a low mile example out on the track, but were also appreciative to see it being driven like it should too. Earl did have one off-track excursion, but luckily that only put some grass stains on the tires and gladly nobody fainted when it dropped out of view on the far corner!! Although, that wasn't as exciting as Chris Hadden's SVO making a sideways sliding bee-line toward the pit wall coming out of the carousel onto the front straight...everybody survived w/o damage other than Chris' mental state for a few moments.

I have a feeling that the 19K on the odo is accurate, it is just that the car has been driven a bit on the more 'fun' side of things.

I was actually surprised it didn't go for more, but it looks like it went to a good owner from his comments in the auction.
