  • Bangin noise when hittin bumps

Ok, the Previous owner told me about a rattle he could figure out when he sold me the car. Ive been lookin into it and narrowed it down to suspension, front and back. It happens at all speeds, even slow creeps thru gravel driveways etc. It sounds like metal hittin metal, thought it was the hood bangin around etc. Another thing I noticed was that it went away when I hit the brakes or have the brakes on... Suspension shop says dead struts and tie rods, but is there anything else could cause this???

How bad is the noise? Mine had a clunking noise that was due to the anti-rattle clips not being in place on the rear calipers. However it is a 20+ year old car, so you can expect parts to be worn out.

Inner tie rods could be it. Under braking the front wheels pull the slack out of the tie rods and it will quiet them. Another possibility is the front calipers. Some aftermarket pads have the holes in the pads a little too big and the caliper will rattle on the caliper pins. I also had a bad strut that would cluck when it was cold outside.

        Sway bar links

Check to be sure the sway bar links aren't hitting the coil springs on compression. Some of the aftermarket ones have a long threaded end that can hit the coils. Makes a hell of a racket, sounds catastrophic, or it did on my GF's son's 86' 5.0 till we pulled out the "blue wrench" and took care of it.

It could be just about any loose nut / bolt or worn out front LCA bushing so I'd put it up on jackstands and check them all. My recommendation for the first to check is the nut on the top of the onion head that attaches the strut / shaft to the sleeve in the rubber bushing. If it's even just alittle loose you will get the "Bang" sound. Been there... fixed that.

Awesome responses, many different things to look at, I appreciate it. Ill write them all down and check them off as I go, car handled fine until the struts went south, but its always had that sound like you took a thin sheet of metal and threw it on the asphalt, lol. Ill check everything as soon as it quits rainin out here.

Put new pads on the front and replaced the sway bar bushings, brakes better, but still rattles...didnt see anything about anti-rattle clips. There werent any on the old pads and my Haynes manual said nothing about them. Anyone wanna help me out with that? Im gonna go on next weekend and snoop around a little more. Thanks

You have to get a seperate small parts kit, usually around $12 each for front and rear, that contains new caliper bushings and the anti-rattle clips.

Nice, thanks!!! Ill go pick them up today and see if I can find the time to put em on. Seems like this rattle is a common problem for SVOs and Turbo Coupes after searching turboford and here.

Nope, not that I know of at least. Doesnt appear to be, everything looks stock under there. I still cant freakin find any anti-rattle clips or caliper bushings. Ill try again tomorrow if I can, the guy behind the desk today was old and tried his best, but couldnt figure out what he was doin. Ill see what happens

The anti rattle clips on the front come attached o the pads. The rears are a separate spring wire loop that goes on last.

                        See pics below.

sorry to be a pain -- I removed the links --
Advance auto has a article up on their website about how to put a V8 into a SVO, and we won't allowing links to their site here any longer.

Napa has the anti-rattle clips as well.

Thats alright, I dont go to advanced anymore, I like autozoo or oreillys anyways. Im hoping to get some good info in the next couple days, school has been tryin to kill me, so all this nonsense with the SVO hasnt helped, but I know with a little patience and some help I can get this all taken care of

Such as? I ran into this today at the track. From what I can tell the Konis are hitting the hood.
