  • Race Brake Pads - What Brakes Does an 86 SVO Have

I did a search but did not find the answer.

What brakes does an 86 SVO run? Are they SVO specific or did Ford rob the parts bin for them? I need to get some race brake pads for my 86 SVO, but the pad suppliers do not seem to have a special listing for an 86 SVO, and I do not think it is standard Mustang stuff. What do I tell them? Is it Lincoln stuff? Something else?

With regard to brake lines, the search revealed that there might be several different kinds. If I call Classic Tube, will they have everything that I need, or must I hit a salvage yard for some of it?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you as always.

Front and rear pads to fit an 84-88 Lincoln Mark VII or a 82-84 Lincoln Continental are the same pads that an SVO uses. Same with the calipers.

Get the Hawk HPS shoes for the front. You don't use the rears much and any ggod name brand pad should work fine. The Hawk's made my car feel like I had a big brake setup. You can get them at tirerack.com or summitracing.com.

I've got Stillen pads front and rear on mine. Pretty happy with them.
Mall security got called on me when I was "braking" them in though. LOL
Guess someone thought it was strange that some car was stopping, taking off, stopping, taking off over and over again out in the far corner of the lot.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

Yeah, tirerack.com has several options available. Since I plan on tracking the car soon, but don't have the coin for more of an upgrade right now, I went with a set of Hawk HP+ pads and just some Satisfied premium rears (the only rears tirerack offers for the SVO). I had great experiences with the HPS and HP+ on my SVT Focus, very nice pads and a great upgrade. Between them and some DOT 5.1 brake fluid I have a lot more confidence in the SVO's stock brakes (for now).

Just a note, on tirerack you need to select the year, make, and model of your mustang, and also select the "5-lug conversion option" to see the SVO parts...

Go to maximum motorsports, they have excellent prices, Hawk HPS or HP+ and porterfield rear pads.

Not to sound like like a smart alec here, but SVO's have SVO brakes. Any other car that has the same pads will probably not have a listing for any type of performance pad. I have been in the parts industry for 20 years and applications almost always say "except SVO" or "SVO".

DOT 5 brake fluid is not a good fluid, it is not compatable with DOT3-4.

Ford H/D fluid is pretty good even for track use if you have some in the metal can. It has a higher rating.

I said DOT 5.1, it's not silly cone based...

I have been using the Stillen stuff for years with NO problems at all!

Whatever brakes you choose run air ducts in the front and some type of open wheel. The stock SVO wheel will ruin any brand of pad.

Should I use any special material in the front pads to avoid so much "brake dust"?.....what do you guys recommend

                        Hi Ralph,

Brake dust on front wheels is pretty much a necessary evil. In the past some places have marketed covers/shields goong between the hub and wheel that stop brake dust from getting to the wheels. The problem is that they also inhibit the airflow that cools the brakes.

                          ..brake dust

Hi Pat, incidentally that alternator cable was fantastic (just in case I didn't say so before), Ithought I had done something wrong but it turned out to be a bad evaporator switch....anyhow what I was thinking about the front braked is to replace them with ceramic or any other material that claims to generate less brake dust...I know that unfortunaltely,as you said, it is an "evil"..lol..and we can't get rid of that dust.
                          Thanks

                          Ralph L.

                            Anyone try EBC greenstuff pads?
