  • Recommended brake upgrades

My brake rotors are warpped and I, like most of you I'm sure, prefer to upgrade, rather than replace stock parts. I drive on the street daily, never on a track (maybe someday but not regularly), spirited driving very often though. My question is to all of you who have upgraded brake rotors, is it worth the money to get Powerslots or something like them, or just get stock replacements, Im on a tight budget. Secondly, I hate seeing rust on the rotors, has anyone found rotors that do not rust?

Heres the list of things I had planned on changing, feel free to make positive or negative recommendations on any of these, or other, parts you have experience with.

Rotors: stock replacement, or Powerslot (depends on forum input)
Pads: frnt - Hawk HPS, rr - stock replacement (I'm set on these)
Lines: Upgrade to SS braided lines all 4 corners
Fluid: Flush and fill with valvoline syn power synthetic brake fluid (is there any difference performance wise in any brake fluid?)

Got some replacements if you want them. Just stock and used but good. Think I have some hawk pads for the fronts as well.

Ryans89notch, how much for each of these, and are the hawk pads the HPS or ceramics?

You can have them. I have a box full of these pads from the old 84 scca car so I'll still have plenty left. They aren't the ceramics I'm quite sure. I'll round the stuff up but they are at my friends and he is in disney world till this weekend. I will get back at you.

You can use the valvoline syntheic if you want, but the guys who do track days recommend the Heavy Duty Motorcraft brake fluid. The stuff still comes in a steel can which doesn't allow moisture to penetrate like a plastic bottle.

I've used the valvoline synthetic before and will not use it again.

Well you wanted an opinion, so here is mine.. As for changing the front rotors, I would stay with the stock stuff, unless you are doing some serious open track stuff.. Even then all you really need is an open wheel (like a nice 5 spoke NOT the stock SVO wheel) & brake ducts.. I have all stock stuff on my car & all was good until I really roasted them when at a open track event.. 3.5 miles 21 turns, seations lasted 25-30 minutes with 25-30 min breaks to let things cool off (of which they didn't).. After the 4th outting the brakes started to pulsate.. 3 laps was enough.. Let the car cool down & now they are just fine..

All rotors will rust no matter what you replace them with.. They are bare metal & with just the himidity in the air they will rust if you don't use them.. IIRC, I heard something like 3 days & you can see the rust on them..

I also think that using synthetic brake fluid is not good if you are really hard on the brakes.. Something about the boiling point too low?? I might be wrong, but I know that if you search you will find several post about that..

I learned my lesson the hard way, I won't use it on a track day again either.

Some premium brand rotors have a zinc coating to prevent rust. Or just find some self etching primer/paint and spray the replacements.
